How to Become a Tutor

• Are you an MSUM student looking for a job
  that fits your schedule?
   
• Do you like to write and talk about writing?
   
• Do you enjoy other people and have a natural
  interest in many different subjects?

If so, then you should consider becoming a
tutor at the MSUM Write Site

Theory and Methods of Tutoring Writing (ENGL 395, Spring semester only)  is a required course for students interested in becoming Write Site Tutors.  This lab class not only helps students strengthen personal writing skills, but also helps students develop one-on-one teaching skills. 

At the beginning of the semester, students review basic writing conventions, rules, and processes.  After the first seven weeks, students tutor their peers in the Write Site for credit.  From the eighth week on, the class usually meets just one hour a week, depending on the size of the class. 

Even if students decide not to apply for a tutoring position, the class is excellent for future teachers or for students in other fields wanting to develop their leadership and communication skills.  Tutoring builds experience for your resume.

To be hired, students not only have to perform well in the class, but they also need recommendations from two faculty members.  Students are also required to write a letter of application for a tutoring position and interview with the director.
