Jean Stephenson Women’s Studies Scholarship
The Jean Stephenson Scholarship was created to honor the memory of Jean Rutkowski Stephenson in Spring 2008. It is intended to support an upperclass Women's Studies student who demonstrates excellence in scholarship, character and future potential.Scholarships by Nomination:
Each year the Women's Studies program presents two awards to students who have made significant contributions to the program in the current academic year. Students considered for these awards are nominated by WS faculty and the WS committee then chooses the recipients. Please forward the names of students you would like to nominate along with a brief statement as to why they should be considered. Details of awards are below:1. Outstanding Women’s Studies Student Scholarship
One scholarship ($500) is awarded each year for the student who receives the Outstanding Women's Studies Student honor. The scholarship/award is given to the Women's Studies student who has contributed the most to the Women's Studies program in the previous academic year. Students are nominated by members of the Women's Studies Faculty. The WS committee as a whole determines the recipient. The committee may consider the following types of contributions in choosing the award recipient:
- Service to the program through volunteer assistance to programming or the Women's Studies Committee.
- Member in and service to the Women's Studies Honor Society - Iota, Iota, Iota.
- Service to the University - student organizations, student senate, university committees, advisory councils, etc.
- Activism in the community
- Involvement in Women's Studies as a discipline locally, regionally or nationally.
Eligibility: The student must be a declared Women's Studies major or minor.
2) First Year Women's Studies Student Award
A $100 gift certificate to the MSUM bookstore is given to the student who receives this award. The award is given a first year student who displays outstanding potential as a student in WS courses and in the program. Students are nominated by members of the WS Faculty and the WS committee determines the recipient. The committee may consider the following in choosing the award recipient:
- Demonstrated ability and interest in Women's Studies as a field of study through classwork
- Involvement with the Women's Studies program
- Service to the University, particularly related to women's, gender, multicultural, etc. issues
Eligibility: Open to all first year students taking WS courses
AARP Foundation Scholarship
Women in
age 40 and older may be eligible to receive scholarships ranging from $500 to $5,000 from the AARP Foundation. North Dakota The scholarships will be awarded to those who are seeking new job skills, training and educational opportunities to support themselves and their families.
To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be a female age 40 or older as of March 31, 2009, be able to demonstrate financial need, and be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary school or training program within six months of the scholarship award date.
Priority consideration is given to women raising children of another family member (such as grandparents raising grandchildren, or those raising siblings or nieces/nephews), women who have been out of the work force for an extended period of time; and women in dead-end jobs – those with no opportunity for advancement, low pay and lacking either health or retirement benefits.
