• You will need the following equipment:
  1).  transparent plastic vial
  2).  polyurethane foam plug
  3).  blue plastic breathing cap

• You will need the following supplies:
  1).  fruit fly media -  Carolina Instant Drosophila Medium Formula 4-24 *
  2).  dry viable yeast
  3).  distilled water or tap water

• Place one unit ("bucket") of fly media in the plastic vial.

• Add one unit ("bucket") of distilled or tap water.  Mix gently and allow the media to harden for one or two minutes.

• Sprinkle several grains of yeast on the surface of the media.

• Note: a vial with media should be plugged at all times, except when adding or removing flies, to prevent contamination by stray flies.

• After adding flies to the vial place a breathing cap over the foam plug to reduce the rate of water evaporation from the media.

• Cultures should be maintained at 20^o - 25^o C.
