Creating a Scattergram with the Excel Speadsheet Program

To create a scatterplot with the Excel Spreadsheet Program, open a new worksheet and create a table with the data that will be used to create the scatterplot. We will use the data from Table 3 - Reading and Spelling Scores for 10 Students - which may look like the following after being entered into an Excel worksheet.

Create a scatterplot from the Table 3 data as follows:

  1. Select cells B2 through C12 and then click the Chart Wizard icon.

  2. In the Chart Wizard - Step 1 of 4 - Chart Type window, click on the Standard Types tab and then select XY(Scatter) under Chart type: and click Next.

  3. Click Next in the Chart Wizard - Step 2 of 4 - Chart Source Data window.

  4. In the Chart Wizard - Step 3 of 4 - Chart Options window, click the Titles tab and enter Table 3 Correlation in the Chart title: box, Reading in the Value (X) Axis box, and Spelling in the Value (Y) Axis: box.

  5. Click on the Gridlines tab and then click on the Major gridlines box to deselect it.

  6. Click on the Legend tab and then click on the Show legend box to deselect it. Click on Next.

  7. In the Chart Wizard - Step 4 of 4 - Chart Location window, click Finish and the scattergram chart appears on the same worksheet as the data.

  8. Click on and drag the boxes on the sides or top and bottom of the figure until the scatterplot figure is approximately square. Then click anywhere in the body of the figure and drag it to the desired position on the page.

The completed scatterplot would look like:

As an activity, use the Excel Spreadsheet to create scatter diagrams for Tables 1 and 2 and then compare the resultant scatterplot with those show in the lesson.
