Ed 602 - Lesson 8 Assignment

Using the Excel worksheet in which you entered the data for 31 Ed 602 students, and found the mean, population variance, population standard deviation, sample variance, and sample standard deviation for three variables in Assignment 6:

  1. Use the spreadsheet program to find the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient between the variables: Distance to Moorhead and Number of Siblings and between the variables Distance to Moorhead and City Size.

You can place the correlations wherever you wish to on the worksheet, but be certain to use a label for each correlation. For example, you could use the labels Correlation between Distance to Moorhead and Number of Siblings = and Correlation between Distance to Moorhead and City Size =

  2. On the same worksheet as you used for item 1 of this assignment, or on a blank worksheet, enter the following data for the ranks in Reading and ranks in Visual Acuity for 5 pupils. Find the Spearman Rank Order Correlation Coefficient between the two rankings. You can place the correlation wherever you wish to on the worksheet, but be certain to use a label for the correlation.

Ranks on Reading and Visual Acuity for Five Pupils
Pupil Reading Rank Visual Acuity Rank
Bently 1 4
Arthur 2 5
Alicia 3 2
Hortense 4 3
Hagar 5 1

Review the section on Calculating Correlation with the Excel Spreadsheet Program to assist you in completing the assignment.

Save As your modified spreadsheet, with the averages, the population variances, the population standard deviations, the sample variances, the sample standard deviations, and the coorelations on it. Send an e-mail message to your course instructor with your Assignment 8 Spreadsheet attached. If you are unable to send attachments, you may print out your worksheet and FAX it to your instructor at FAX Number: 541-608-9125. If you do this, also send electronic mail to your course instructor saying that you have sent your assignment in by FAX.
