Ed 602 - Lesson 6 Assignment
Using the Excel worksheet in which you entered the data for 31 Ed 602
students, and found the means for three variables in
Assignment 5, use the spreadsheet program to find the population variance,
the population standard deviation, the sample variance, and the sample
standard deviation for the variables: Distance to Moorhead,
City Size, and Number of Siblings.
You can complete this assignment as follow:
- In Column A click on a cell three cells below the last student Number entry,
possibly cell A36 and enter the word Pop Var.
- Click on cell E36 and enter the formula to calculate
the population variance for the variable in Column E (Distance to Moorhead).
Format this cell to three decimal places. Note: If the answer you try to put in any cell
is too large the cell will
contain ##########. If this happens just make the column wider by moving the
cusor to the lettered column heading and then drag the column border to the
right. In this way you can make the column as wide as you wish to.
- Copy the formula in cell E36 to cell G36
(City Size) and cell H36 (Number
of Siblings).
- In a similar manner enter Pop SD in cell A37 and
then enter the formula to find the population standard deviation in cell
E37 and copy this formula into cells G37 and
H37.
- In a similar manner enter Sample Var in cell A38 and
then enter the formula to find the sample variance in cell
E38 and copy this formula into cells G38 and
H38.
- In a similar manner enter Sample SD in cell A39 and
then enter the formula to find the sample standard deviation in cell
E39 and copy this formula into cells G39 and
H39.
Review the section on Calculating the Variance and the Standard
Deviation with the Excel Spreadsheet Program to assist you in completing the
assignment.
Save As your modified spreadsheet, with the averages, the population
variances, the population standard deviations, the sample variances, and the sample
standard deviations on it. Send an e-mail message to your
course instructor with your
Assignment 6 Spreadsheet attached. If you are unable to send attachments,
you may print out your worksheet and FAX it to your instructor at
FAX Number (541) 608-9125. If you do this,
also send electronic mail to your course instructor saying that you have sent
your assignment in by FAX.
