Ed 602 - Lesson 4 Assignment

Create the following charts with the Excel spreadsheet. You will be using worksheets you created for the Lesson 3 Assignment to complete the Lesson 4 Assignment.

  1. Using the Excel worksheet on which you created the frequency distribution for Number of Siblings in Ed 602, Assignment 3, create a bar graph with the Excel spreadsheet program. With this data we really should make a histogram since the variable, number of siblings, although having discrete values, is at the ratio level of measurement. The Excel charting program will not create histograms (where the bars are contiguous to one another) but will only create bar graphs (where the bars have spaces between one another). Use the instructions Creating a Bar Graph with the Exel Spreadsheet Program to assist you in creating your bar graph.

Hint: When you are selecting the data from the frequency distribution for Number of Siblings for your bar graph, you do not wish to include the Tally column in your selection, so select the Siblings column, press the command key (for Excel on the Macintosh computer) or the ctrl key (for Excel on the Windows PC), and then select the Frequency column of the frequency distribution.

  2. Using the Excel worksheet on which you created the grouped frequency distribution for Distance to Moorhead in Ed 602, Assignment 3, create a frequency polygon with the Excel spreadsheet program. Use the instructions Creating a Frequency Polygon with the Excel Spreadsheet Program to assist you in creating your frequency polygon.

Hint: The variable labels which will appear on the abscissa of your graph are the interval midpoints, so select the Interval Midpoint and Frequency columns as you prepare to make the frequency polygon.

Save As your modified spreadsheet, with your graphs contained in it. Send an e-mail message to your course instructor with your Assignment 4 Spreadsheet attached.

Did you have difficulty in completing this assignment? Many students have difficulty in using the Excel charting program. You may wish to view one or more of the following QuickTime movies demonstrating solutions to the two problems of assignment 4.
