The Veteran's office provides counseling, GI Bill certifications, tutorial assistance, and is concerned with recruiting veterans and veteran's dependents.  

New students who have never used the GI Bill before must complete an application for benefits, VA form 22-1990. If you are applying for benefits based on your active duty service, a certified copy of your DD form 214 must be submitted. If you are applying for benefits based on your service in the guard or reserve, a copy of your Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE) must be submitted. New students who are receiving benefits based on a parent or spouse's service must complete VA form 22-5490. These forms are on the VA web site.

New students who are transferring their GI Bill benefits, must complete a Change of Place of Training form (VA form 22-1995 OR 22-5495 for Chapter 35 students). New and Continueing students must go to www.mnstate.edu/veterans and click on the links for GI Bill Information and Enrollment Verification and then complete the on-line forms.

MSUM Veterans Educational Benefits? If you are a Veteran, you may be eligible for the GI Bill or other military education benefits. You may also be eligible for disability services, personal counseling, tutorial assistance, financial aid or VA Funded work-study. This website may assist you with your education benefits.


MSUM has two resources on campus to help guide the Veteran through all the benefit information.  The Veterans Resource Center is your one-stop-shop for all military benefits.  The center has space for studying, work-study and is a place to socialize with fellow Veterans. Hours are posted on the website. Please call or stop by for more information.


The Certifying official, located in room 201 of the Livingston Library, will assist you with certification of your benefits. If you need further information, please call or stop in.

Here are the steps a Veteran needs to accomplish to apply at MSUM:


Schedule an appointment to meet with the Higher Education Veterans Programs Regional Coordinator, or staff at the on campus veteran's center to discuss specific veterans/higher education questions.


1. Apply for admission thru College/University Admissions Office. http://www.mnstate.edu/admissions/apply.cfm


2. Send college level transcripts (including military courses) to the college admissions office to be evaluated for transfer credit.


3. Submit official high school transcripts.


4. Submit ACT/SAT scores or complete appropriate assessment exam.


5. Visit the Certifying Official on campus and to apply for eligible programs. Bring copies of your DD-214 and VONAPP applications if you applied for benefits online. The Certifying official is located in LI Room 201 ext. 2603.


6. Montgomery GI Bill (bring DD-214, enlistment contract, NOBE, (Kicker contract if appropriate.)

           a. Chapter 30 - Active Duty GI Bill (also apply for FAFSA)

           b. Chapter 1606 and 1607 (also apply for FAFSA, Federal Tuition Assistance and State Tuition Reimbursement.)

           c. Chapter 31 - Vocational Rehabilitation (also apply for FAFSA.)

           d. Chapter 35 - for dependants


7. Apply for Financial Aid (FAFSA) and supplemental funds. www.fafsa.ed.gov


8. Meet with an academic advisor or Counselor.

10. Register for classes.


11. Apply for Federal Tuition Assistance and State Tuition Reimbursement (if applicable.)

Recent legislation in Minnesota requires Minnesota State Colleges and Universities to review military academic transcripts and give appropriate credit based on the American Council on Education (ACE) recommendations.To get your official military transcript go to:
