TOCAR Collaborative Awards Logo Design Prize to
The Training Our Campuses Against Racism (TOCAR) Collaborative announces that it has awarded Hannah Mische, a senior graphics design major in MSUM's Art Department, $250 for rights to her TOCAR logo design. The TOCAR Collaborative is made up of faculty, staff, administrator and student representatives from NDSU, Concordia, MSCTC and MSUM as well as community members and organizations. The logo will be used by all the organizations in the TOCAR Collaborative. During academic year 2002-3, the logo design contest was held in Julie Mader-Meersman's Graphic Design 200B class to provide the class with an opportunity to design for a real world client. Mische was a student in Mader-Meersman's class in Fall 2002. After reviewing several impressive designs, the Collaborative came to a consensus that Mische's design best conveyed several of the key concepts and goals of the TOCAR initiative. Mische states that she sought to capture three main aspects of the TOCAR initiative in her design: 1) a commitment to raising awareness of racism and other forms of oppression (through the abstraction of an image of an eye); 2) an embracing of inclusiveness (illustrated by arms which encompass both campuses and communities which engage in TOCAR); and 3) a ripple effect of social change which begins at the campuses (and can offer long term and wide ranging impact throughout the region). Mische, a native of Tioga, ND, plans to open a graphics design business in the Twin Cities after she graduates. |
