Gilman story of the same name which has become an important addition to
American Literature course curricula. Set in the late 1800's, the story
features Elizabeth, an aspiring writer who becomes ill and is forced by
her doctor and her husband to take a "rest cure." Completely isolated,
her mind creates a world inside the wallpaper in her room - a world in
which a woman is trapped and unable to escape.

the 1950s when the South African regime attempted to extend the hated

Josephs, Dora Tamana, Frances Baard and others tell their stories,
illustrated with archival footage, and punctuated by South African
music.

those reforms which shaped our society.

as a normal child in an integrated preschool, and the story of how he
was identified as a child with special needs is told. Some of Michael's
early behavior that initially concerned his parents and teachers is
shown, and viewers are given the opportunity to observe parts of his
subsequent transdisciplinary assessment. Michael was found to have
learning disabilities.

This is the continuation of Michael's story. (See: "Can You Really Test
Them At That Age?) Through the observation of Michael's IEP meeting and
an interview with his program coordinator, teachers are shown how
specific intervention goals and objectives can be developed from
assessment results. Teachers are also able to see these same goals and
objectives translated into actual classroom activities.

Jane Merrill, a pediatric therapist, demonstrates common positioning
and handling techniques and the use of adaptive equipment with
physically handicapped children. Demonstrations are done with a doll
named Priscilla, followed by brief video segments of physically

Kevin Brick, an occupational therapist, provides a fascinating
demonstration of many pieces of equipment commonly used in preschool
classrooms that can be adapted to help children with special needs. A
brief case study is presented about a little boy named Noah who was
born without a hand. His mother helps him to demonstrate how his
prosthetic device fits onto his body, how it works and how he learned
to use it, as she discusses critical issues in working with children
who have a limb deficiency.

mild hearing loss. The cause of her developmental problems is unknown.
A home teacher works with Caitlin and her mother to facilitate
Caitlin's development in all areas. Joe is 5 years old and has
neurofibromatosis. He also has generalized developmental delays in all
areas and is mainstreamed into a regular nursery program. He receives
special education and special therapies in his home. The home teacher
and nursery teacher work closely together to coordinate his program.
