A TELEVISION HISTORY: EPISODE 1: THE ROOTS OF WAR
(VHS) 1983. 60 min. sd. color.#14800
(Mounted on cassette with Episode 2)
A short history of the century during which France dominated Vietnam
under the colonial tradition leading up to the rise of Ho Chi Minh. In
the last days of WW II, the tiny country was the scene of chaos,
great-power rivalries and a power vacuum. Ho, flanked by U.S. officers,
declared independence in Hanoi, but the British helped the French
regain control of Saigon--effectively dividing the country. ![]()
VIETNAM:
A TELEVISION HISTORY: EPISODE 2: THE FIRST VIETNAM WAR
(VHS) 1983. 60 min. sd. color. #14800
(Mounted on cassette with Episode 1)
The Viet Minh led by Ho tried to oust the French from the rest of the
peninsula. The U.S. viewed this together with the "loss of China" and
the Korean War as parts of the Cold War. They escalated aid to the
French, while growing increasingly impatient with them. The French
influence ended with their defeat at Dien Bien Phu and with the 1954
Geneva conference which resulted in a cease-fire and temporary division
of the country. ![]()

Dividing the country caused Catholics and pro-French northerners to
flee to the South where Ngo Dinh Diem had become President with U.S.
support in the form of monetary aid and a few military advisors. In
1960, the National Liberation Front appeared as an effort to overthrow
the South Vietnamese government. With Kennedy as U.S. President, the
number of U.S. advisors escalated. In 1963, Diem was overthrown by the
Right, rather than the Left. ![]()

After Kennedy's assassination in 1963, Lyndon Johnson inherited
"revolving door" coups in Saigon as none of Diem's successors were able
to control the South. Increasingly, the FLN guerrillas controlled the
countryside as the South Vietnam army disintegrated. The Tonkin Gulf
incident precipitated raids on the North and the Marines landed at
Danang. Secretly, Johnson approved open-ended deployment of U.S.
troops. ![]()

One of the big turning points in the war came when the Americans
thought they were winning, while actually stalemate existed. On the Tet
holiday attacks came in areas the U.S. thought to be secure, including
Saigon. The defeats caused second thoughts in Washington that
eventually resulted in Johnson's decision to call a partial bombing

(VHS) 1983. 60 min. sd. color. #14830

The U.S. began disinvolving itself from the war by training the South
Vietnamese army to fight the battles. The withdrawal of U.S. troops
resulted in hardship for the South Vietnamese as the flow of goods and

The fate of two of Vietnam's weaker neighbors was also decided as the

The years of heavy U.S. involvement in Vietnam (1965-73) changed
America. From the view of a sizable portion of the public the country
was involved in a war that was not necessary. The country polarized
between hawks and doves. To what extent were the opposing sides playing

A TELEVISION HISTORY: EPISODE 12: THE END OF THE TUNNEL
1973-75 (VHS) 1983. 60 min. sd. color. #14850

With the North Vietnamese spring offensive of 1975, the South
Vietnamese army collapsed, falling back to Saigon and culminating with
the memorable exodus of the remaining Americans, by helicopter from the
roof of the embassy. For the first time, American soldiers returned
home to ignominy rather than admiration. To further challenge the
public faith, Watergate destroyed the respect of many for the
Presidency itself. ![]()

A TELEVISION HISTORY: EPISODE 13: LEGACIES (VHS)
1983. 60 min. sd. color. #14860 In many respects Vietnam remains the
"war that will not go away." Veteran's issues include delayed stress
syndrome and the effects of Agent Orange. The military may never regain
its WWII popularity. The boat people demonstrate that a portion of the
Vietnamese were so unable to relate to the victors that they would risk
their lives to escape. There is also the destructive effects of the
thirty year war on the once beautiful land itself. ![]()
