UNDERSTANDING URBAN SPRAWL (VHS) 1998. 47 min. sd. color. #64250 In this program, scientist and environmentalist Dr. David Suzuki examines the social, economic, and environmental implications of "sprawl," the low-density development that spreads out from the edges of cities and towns. For decades suburban housing has carried the promise of paradise, but the need for continuous infrastructure development and the intensification of sprawl-related ecological issues, which are eroding health and quality of life, are making the true impact of suburbia painfully clear in the areas surrounding Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Vancouver, British Columbia. However, Portland, Oregon has become a model of what can be accomplished when administrators, businesses, and residents commit themselves to slowing sprawl and reestablishing the amenities that make for a happy and healthy community.

UNSER LEHRER DOKTOR SPECHT PROGRAMS 1 - 13 (VHS) 1992. Each program 47 min. sd. color. (See individual numbers below.) This series follows the trials and tribulations of Dr. Markus Specht, his colleagues and students as they deal with German reunification on a day-to-day basis. Not only school life, but also extracurricular activities are chronicled; Dr. Specht's love life plays a prominent role in the action as well. Gain a deeper awareness of what reunification means to Germans and learn a great deal about schools and students in contemporary Germany. (German language, no subtitles.)

Program 1: Warum Nicht Potsdam (#35520) After moving to Berlin from western Germany Dr. Markus Specht is offered a position at a Gymnasium in Potsdam, not only as a teacher, but as director of the school. He does not need too much convincing to accept the job.

Program 2: Der Schulanfanger (#35530) Dr. Specht finds much mistrust among the students as he begins his work; they feel he simply cannot understand their needs, having come from the West. When he can help the students out of a difficult situation with the police, he wins their acceptance.

Program 3: Die Neue Wohnung (#35540) Specht's students continue to make life interesting for him when they demand the resignation of an older teacher at the school. Specht's private life becomes turbulent, too, as he meets attractive women who have connections to the school.

Program 4: Ein Kundigungsgrund (#35550) Again and again Dr. Specht is confronted with problems rooted in the East German experience, which he himself has not lived. Students plan a strike against a teacher they had in the old system, and right wing radical youths set fire to a barracks for foreigners seeking asylum. Specht turns in his resignation.

Program 5: Ein Paar Einbruche (#35560) Because of the support of his students, Specht decides to withdraw his resignation, but new problems emerge: Two students have been involved in separate incidents of stealing. Dr. Specht tries to clear up the problems without involving the police.

Program 6: Tanzstunde (#35570) Dr. Specht and his students continue to have confrontations with a group of right wing radicals. Specht's students want to deal with the group in their own fashion. Another problem must be acknowledged as well: One of the teachers is an alcoholic.

Program 7: Schule der Liebe (#35580) In this episode Specht's love life is again at center stage with a number of interesting complications. Besides which, one of his students invites him to her birthday party, and it turns out he is the only guest.

Program 8: Strohwitwer (#35590) New characters appear in this segment as a former student of Specht's comes to Potsdam to finish his Abitur there. A new psychologist begins her work in the school as well, although Specht is somewhat suspicious of her motives.

Program 9: Nichts als Mißverstandnisse (#35600) The school psychologist, Regine Holle, is able to make some positive suggestions for both teachers and students and increasingly wins the trust of all involved. Dr. Specht's father comes to visit and is completely confused by Specht's love life, indeed Specht himself is having trouble keeping everyone straight.

Program 10: Eine Herzensangelegenheit (#35610) Different situations arise that all have the potential to damage Specht's reputation, although he is not responsible for any of them. He ends up having to do a lot of explaining.

Program 11: Die Ferienreise (#35620) The tragedy of AIDS hits Specht's class, too; one of the girls has become HIV-positive because of a blood transfusion. Her method of dealing with the problem for the moment is to run away, but Specht and others go to visit her anyway.

Program 12: Die Flucht (#35630) During the confrontations with the right wing radicals earlier in the series, one of Specht's students has stolen a pistol from them. Now the police are after the student because of that pistol, and the boy flees. Dr. Specht, of course, is under suspicion of having helped him escape.

Program 13: Der Rucktritt (#35640) Dr. Specht again hands in his resignation as director of the school because of the activities of his students, who have cleared up the difficulties with the police in a rather unorthodox manner. Specht will remain as a teacher at the school, and he even has a reason to celebrate: His father is getting married.

Interviews with teachers and administrators explain the many ways that standards assist educators in achieving the mission of the school: Identifying what children learn rather than what is being taught; determining the essential knowledge that needs to be conveyed in units and lessons; providing teachers and principals with a language for discussing achievement; and fostering clearer communications with students and parents about the curriculum and targets for learning.

Classroom scenes paint a vivid picture of a standards-based classroom, including: How teachers change their instructional planning and delivery to focus on essential knowledge; which teaching practices can increase student learning in a standards-based curriculum; why the backward design process is essential to teaching standards; and how to use the 3-step backward design process to focus on lessons and units matched to standards.
