TKUMA VOLUME 1: THE CONFLICT (VHS) 1998. 52 min. sd. color/b&w. #65750 May 14, 1948: David Ben-Gurion declared the independence of the Jewish state of Israel. The following day the neighboring Arab populations declared war. Israel was born from this conflict and emerged a refuge for a people dispersed throughout the world, yet still engaged in combat with its Arab neighbors for its right to exist. This program presents the history of Israel, from its founding Zionist fathers in the 19th century such as Theodor Herzl, to the war of independence and the emergence of Israel as a prosperous, independent Jewish state.
TKUMA VOLUME 3: THE PEOPLE'S ARMY (VHS) 1998. 54 min. sd. color/b&w. #65770 Born in battle and ever struggling to survive, Israel requires compulsory military service for women as well as men. This program traces the history of the Israel Defense Forces in all of its conflicts, from the war for independence, where many immigrants went directly from their ships into battle; to the formation of Unit 101, the forerunner of the famed and feared paratrooper battalions; to the crack commando teams that protect the borders and police the trouble spots within the country today. The program also includes the details of present-day life in the field with the IDF. As ever, being an Israeli means being a soldier.
TKUMA VOLUME 4: WHOSE STATE, WHOSE RELIGION (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color/b&w. #65780 Israel was founded by Zionists, who viewed Israel as the Promised Land, the patrimony of the Jewish people. Today, many Israelis define themselves as a nation, not as a religion. Does being an Israeli mean embracing a religion, or is it a national identity? This program examines this divisive question that has pitted Israeli against Jew. Beginning with the forefathers who founded Israel on Zionist principles, to those who have immigrated seeking a homeland, this question of identity continues to shape Israeli politics and policy.
TKUMA VOLUME 5: FROM THE ORANGE TO THE CHIP: ISRAEL'S ECONOMIC REVOLUTION (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color/b&w. #65790 In its quest to boost per capita income to the level of Western Europe and the U.S., Israel has progressed from exporting Jaffa oranges to developing high-tech computer chips in just 50 years. This program explores the ups and downs of the economic revolution that has occurred in this arid, resource-poor region surrounded by historically hostile neighbors. Today, technology rather than agriculture is the backbone of Israel's economic vitality, as it continues its drive to maintain its position as a force in the world technology market, leveraging its diverse and talented human capital.
TKUMA VOLUME 6: FUTURE PEACE, NEXT WAR (VHS) 1998. 52 min. sd. color/b&w. #65800 At the time of Israel's golden anniversary, it was a nation torn between its political left and right. In this program, the vision of Israel's purpose and scope - and the leaders who have interpreted and shaped that vision - is discussed. From the first Begin/Sadat meeting in Jerusalem to the war against the PLO in Lebanon, from the post-Gulf War peace initiatives to the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin, Israel's history has been a story of the search for a lasting peace, but within the context of almost constant war. Even today, the volatile issues of security and territorial compromise remain unresolved.

terrorized greater London during the 1980's. In addition, the

and stunning landscapes. But rapid industrialization, the growing
consumer culture of the 1980s 'bubble economy' era, and the effect of
IMF structural adjustment programs imposed in 1997 when that bubble

(VHS) 1998. 30 min. sd. color. #63910
This moving film is about one of the many terrible cases to come before
the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC).
22-year-old student leader Siphiwo Mtimkulu, and his friend Topsy
Madaka, were shot and burned in 1982 by the feared Security Police
under the former apartheid government. Gideon Nieuwoudt - nicknamed
"Notorious Nieuwoudt" - was a colonel in the Security Police. He and
his colleagues are responsible for the torture, poisoning, and death of
numerous black activists, including Steve Biko. In 1995 a group of top
Security Police officers got a court order to block Mtimkulu's family
from giving evidence before the TRC, threatening to undermine the whole
process. 48 hours before the deadline expired, the officers finally
applied for amnesty. Filmmaker Mark Kaplan documented the case for
three years, during which time Nieuwoudt met with the Mtimkulu family
seeking their forgiveness with unexpected and dramatic consequences.
Kaplan claims this case is a testimony to the best and worst of which
mankind is capable. ![]()
