OUT OF ASIA: NEW THEORIES ON EVOLUTION (VHS) 1997. 50 min. sd. color. #59490 The common consensus among anthropologists is that modern man emerged from Africa. This program examines new evidence that disputes this theory and alleges that simultaneous to the emergence of Homo erectus in Africa, there were also groups of Homo erectus in Australia. Was there an earlier diaspora that predates the African migration? Is there a single, linear evolution from Homo erectus to modern man, or is it possible that there were various strains and that evolution is a result of hybridization? Does Java Man, dated as living two million years ago, refute the Africa theory?
OUT OF THE DARK AGES: A TALE OF FOUR GERMAN EMPERORS: CONRAD II: THE FIRST SALIAN EMPEROR (VHS) 1996. 47 min. sd. color. #65860 The Salian dynasty came to power with the election of Conrad of Swabia after the Saxon dynasty died out in 1024. This program charts the career of the first of the Salian line, Emperor of the Romans and King of the Germans. A formidable ruler, Conrad II obtained suzerainty over the kingdom of Burgundy and reasserted German power in Italy. He also ordered the construction of the architectural centerpiece of his empire: the imperial cathedral in Speyer.
OUT OF THE DARK AGES: A TALE OF FOUR GERMAN EMPERORS: HENRY III: THE HIGH NOON OF THE SALIC EMPIRE (VHS) 1996. 47 min. sd. color. #65870 The reign of Henry III, which began in 1039, marks the zenith of Salian rule. This program presents the story of the man who formed the strongest central government in medieval German history - a government under which Romanesque culture blossomed while making the papacy a virtual vassal to imperial power. However, lay opposition to the emperor in the Holy Roman Empire and criticism of Henry's regime over its treatment of the Church were on the rise during the last years of his reign.
OUT OF THE DARK AGES: A TALE OF FOUR GERMAN EMPERORS: HENRY IV AND HENRY V: THE SALIC EMPIRE BESIEGED (VHS) 1996. 47 min. sd. color. #65880 Henry IV succeeded his father as a young child, and after a childhood troubled by conflicting ambitions of lay and ecclesiastical magnates, he led a life worthy of a Shakespearean tragedy. Continually battling with the Pope, excommunicated, deserted by his wife, and betrayed by his closest supporters - including his son Henry V, who deposed him in 1106 - Henry IV struggled to keep his empire together. However, the usurper Henry V proved to be the last in the Salian line because he died without an heir in 1125.
OUT OF THE MOUTHS OF BABES (VHS) 1978. 28 min. sd. color. #63270 Here is a rare opportunity to see and hear the chronology of language acquisition during the first six years of life. We see active youngsters talk and are able to note the gradual progression that occurs from random babbling, to jargon and one-word sentences, to the use of complicated structures and linguistic concepts. The film emphasizes how children seem to learn language on their own, as part of their biological maturation, extracting the rules of grammar from the language they hear around them. Peter and Jill de Villiers of Harvard University, researchers in language acquisition, provide a clear and informative description of linguistic development. Equally interesting are the carefully structured games and tests they devised for their research.
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM ONE: NEW WORLDS (VHS)
1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28650 (Closed captioned.)
From the vast empires of the Aztecs to the roving tribes of hunters and
gatherers, the evidence of cultural evolution as a global process was
irrefutable. This program charts the intellectual impact of the
European "discovery" of the New World and the ways in which this
discovery influenced both the emergence of anthropology and archaeology
as disciplines.![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM TWO: THE HEARTH (VHS)
1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28660 (Closed captioned.)
The remains of houses at sites reveal the physical contexts of ancient
family life, permitting archaeologists to reconstruct family size,
composition and function. This program studies how the forms and
functions of households vary from society to society, and how the
infrastructure of domestic economy supports not only the family, but
larger social groupings as well. ![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM THREE: ARTISANS AND TRADERS
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28670 (Closed captioned.)
Archaeologists frequently use economic institutions as barometers of
cultural complexity and evolution. This program investigates the
processes (such as population growth and technological change) that
promote specialization and trade, and how these relate to social and
political organization. Particular attention is given to the energy
sources that determine the economic patterns of ancient societies.![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM FOUR: SIGNS AND SYMBOLS
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28680 (Closed captioned.)
Symbolic communication is the most important single element of human
culture. Writing is an invaluable aid to archaeologists in
reconstructing the past. This program demonstrates how archaeologists
detect whatever form of communication remains, then interpret symbolic
meanings and reconstruct symbolic behavior. Also noted are how symbolic
systems change through time, taking on new functions as social contexts
change. ![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM FIVE: POWER, PRESTIGE AND WEALTH
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28690 (Closed captioned.)
How can we measure the power of a long-dead king? This program reveals
the different methods used to study how rulers have gained and kept
power. An evolutionary model, largely derived from the ethnographic
record, defines several successive political forms: Egalitarian
systems, ranked systems (chiefdoms), and stratified systems (states or
civilizations).![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM SIX: REALMS
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28700 (Closed captioned.)
What do rulers do? What are their relationships with their own elites,
commoners and each other? How do they use force, wealth and symbols to
reinforce their positions and vie for advantages? The focus of the
program is the complex political arrangements of ancient civilization
and the basic functions of those systems.
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM SEVEN: SPIRITS GREAT AND SMALL
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28710 (Closed captioned.)
In all cultures, people turn to religion for comfort, guidance and an
explanation of spiritual continuities beyond life and death. Ritual
behavior and sacred spaces and objects give form to religious meanings,
and archaeologists are challenged to detect the significance of what
they find, and even more difficult, to understand this significance and
interpret it properly. This program reviews the basic functions of
religion, how religion reflects and reinforces social, political and
economic institutions, and how it is manipulated as such institutions
evolve.![]()
OUT OF THE PAST PROGRAM EIGHT: COLLAPSE
(VHS) 1992. 60 min. sd. color. #28720 (Closed captioned.)
Classic Maya culture disappeared in its heartland a millennium ago.
Archaeologists working at Copan have found that the Maya left an
important message for other civilizations - one that reveals the
consequences of overpopulation and over-exploitation of resources. This
final program introduces us to the enemy: our own quick-fix solutions
for our long-range problems. The basic message is that the biggest
threat to humans is what we do to ourselves. But through archaeology,
we can apply lessons of the past to the present.![]()
