THE HAPSBURGS PART 1: THE DREAM OF AN EMPIRE (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color. #63790 Although Rudolph von Hapsburg was crowned in 1273, the Hapsburg dynasty did not firmly take root until Frederick III passed the crown to Maximilian I - 220 years later - and even then, an electorate vied with the emperor for ascendancy. This program traces the roots of that monumental power struggle and reveals how the Hapsburg dynasty established itself both in Austria and Spain, shaping the course of European history for six centuries to come.
THE HAPSBURGS PART 2: CROSS AND CRESCENT (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color. #63800 Under Charles V, the Hapsburgs reached their zenith. However, the religious and military forces set in motion during the latter part of the 16th century changed Europe - and the Hapsburg empire - forever. The Reformation, assisted by the printing press, dissolved Catholic hegemony in Europe and led to pan-European warfare employing large numbers of mercenaries. This program examines the political, religious, and class conflicts that precipitated the Thirty Years' War and the resultant flux in Hapsburg fortunes through contemporary accounts and histories. The advance of the Ottoman army to the very gates of Vienna during the Austro-Turkish War and their ensuing defeat also presents the external threats that led to the establishment of modern Europe's boundaries.
THE HAPSBURGS PART 3: THE JEWEL IN THE CROWN (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color. #63810 Explores the dynastic crisis that culminated in the War of the Austrian Succession and the ascendancy of Maria Theresa to the Hapsburg throne. Her father's death in 1740 without a male heir led to the dynastic conflict between the Hapsburgs and Hollenzollerns. Although Frederick the Great was the very embodiment of the Enlightenment - advised by Voltaire, establisher of public education, and grantor of equality to all citizens before the law - he refused to recognize Maria Theresa as ruler. Even though she retained her grip on the throne, it took the Seven Years' War to firmly and finally establish Maria Theresa's benevolent rule, which lasted for 40 years. She was succeeded by her son, Joseph II.
THE HAPSBURGS PART 4: BETWEEN EMPIRE AND NATION (VHS) 1998. 53 min. sd. color. #63820 Examines the liberal forces at work in the 19th century, the conservative policies of the Hapsburg rulers, and the inevitable results of this conflict. It shows how demands for greater freedom, combined with Metternich's resignation, eventually resulted in greater oppression. In examining the revolution of 1848, the program shows the resulting policy of security over liberty and preservation rather than renewal. The nation that emerged from this period remained the keystone of an empire - until the assassination in 1914 of the last Hapsburg heir triggered a world war.

Volume 1: The year 1900 marked the close of the Victorian Era. The growth of the press into a mass medium provided a framework within which cartoons and illustrations were forged into an art form known as "the comics." Highlights the early comic book characters: The Katzenjammer Kids, Betty Boop, Little Orphan Annie, Popeye, Tarzan, Gasoline Alley, Dick Tracy, Flash Gordon, The Phantom and more. Volume 2: Superheroes were born shortly before World War II, and saw active duty on the allied side. Features many of these incredible characters with their variety of superhuman powers. Included is a look at how the events of the 1950's and 1960's inspired the creation of a whole new cast of comic book characters for the "baby boom" generation. Featured characters include: Superman, Batman, Steve Canyon, Peanuts, Captain America, James Bond, Beetle Bailey, Mad Magazine, Andy Capp and more. Volume 3: The underground movement of the late 1960's produced an alternative tradition using a line art style as a vehicle for a ferocious attack on society. These comics flowed through channels other than the established publishing firms. In no time these comics came to be accepted as cultural phenomena in their own right. Featured comics include: Vampirella, Conan, Furry Freak, Spiderman, Little Annie Fanny, Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Creepy Magazine, Judge Dredd, and more.Volume 4: Comic superheroes have now become more human, and face contemporary concerns such as ecological disaster and drugs. Meanwhile, the independent comics carry on, faithful to the spirit of the underground. To conclude this series, we see a glimpse of what's ahead for comics in the 21st century, as today's young artists discuss and show their work. Featured comics include: X-Men, Outland, Green Arrow, Watchmen, Atom, Elf Quest, Ronin, Green Lantern, Heavy Metal Magazine and more.

HORMONE IMPOSTERS (VHS) 1997. 47 min. sd. color. #63860 Looks at the frightening way chemicals in our everyday lives are infiltrating our bodies, mimicking our hormones. By doing this they trigger unwanted activities and block other crucial biological events from taking place. Sexual identity, reproduction and brain development are among the many functions that hormones are responsible for in humans and other animals. In humans, attention deficit, problems with reading and memory, and difficulty in coping with stress may all be linked to hormone-disrupting toxins in our environment. Following scientific clues, this investigative documentary concludes that plastics are one of the main culprits. There are endocrine disrupting chemicals in all plastics, in personal care products from cosmetics to contraceptive, in pesticides and in industrial waste. Will milk processed through plastic tubes, then microwaved in a plastic baby bottle, affect a child's development?

THE HUMANE SPECIES: LESSONS FROM AFRICA (VHS) 2001. ca 60 min. sd. color. #64020 Dr. Bruce Roberts, MSUM Anthropology professor, presented this lecture on Thursday, March 22, 2001. For many Americans, the word Africa conjures images of widespread starvation, recurring drought, endless civil war, and the AIDS epidemic. While such circumstances occur, nonetheless they constitute nearly the entirety of what the western media cares to address concerning the African continent. In the process, the everyday lives of most Africans are disregarded and their voices remain muted. In an attempt to partially compensate for overly negative public conceptions of Africa, this lecture seeks to advance an alternative perspective, one based upon countless Africans, some well-known, others not so celebrated. In carrying out their pursuits these individuals labor against monumental odds, often facing great risks. It is in these courageous acts of charity, goodwill, and forgiveness that Africa holds multiple lessons in humanity for all members of our species.
