THE DIVIDED UNION VOLUME 1:
FORWARD TO SUMTER (VHS) 1987. 51 min. sd. color. #17330 What caused the American
Civil War? The split between North and South was not a surprise - the U.S. had been
evolving into two separate societies and cultures ever since independence. This program
clearly illustrates the rise of the Republican party and the emergence of Abraham Lincoln,
the moves toward secession within the South, industrialization in the North, and the
impact of the cotton gin on the economic development of the South. It also traces the
origins of slavery in North America. These issues finally ignite into the firing of that
fateful first shot at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861, beginning the War Between the States.![]()

Confederate commanders fail to exploit their initial stunning victory at First Manassas.

Shiloh, both sides soon realize the conflict will be long and costly. This episode
recounts the Battle of Antietam, where more Americans died in a single day than on any
field of battle before or since, and concludes with Lincoln's first Emancipation
Proclamation, which cleverly turns the War into a fight to free slaves rather than a
dispute over state's rights. ![]()

the South's legacy of defeat and the War's continuing impact on American life. In

DOES MIND MATTER? (VHS) 1988. 120 min. sd. color. #29370
Mind As a Myth Does the mind exist as a distinct entity apart from our thoughts about it? U. G. Krishnaumurti is a disquieting skeptic and author of Mind Is a Myth and The Mystique of Enlightenment. As "mind" is a myth, he says, so is the notion of "self." The human being is like a dog chewing a dry bone. When its gums bleed, the dog may believe the bone is rich with blood. Just so, we believe the mind is real.
The Mind-Body Problem Most brain researchers believe we will eventually explain the mind in terms of neurological functioning. According to Dr. Julian Isaacs, an applied psychologist, this materialist view is not consistent with experimental evidence. New developments in areas such as theoretical physics, he says, may eventually lead to an understanding of the common ground connecting mind and matter.
Minds, Brains and Science Will computers ever achieve consciousness: John Searle challenges the notion that the human mind operates like a computer, pointing out that intentionality and other human faculties are not achievable through artificial intelligence.
Mind in Tibetan Buddhism The Tibetan Lamas are said to be specialists in understanding the bardo planes of the afterlife. Ole Nydahl is among the first westerners to be trained as a Tibetan Buddhist meditation master. Philosopher and author of Entering the Diamond Way, Nydahl describes the mind as a pure, limitless field where our thoughts create various visions which appear objective to us in sleep and death.
