December 20, 2005 Student Senate Members and Fellow Students: I am honored to have served as your student body president. Elected by a majority of the voters during the presidential election last spring, I immediately took it upon myself to ensure your higher educational needs by incessantly advocating to make differences that positively impacted MSUM students, no matter the degree of difficulty. However, this dutiful privilege requires much time, diligence, support, and strength. It is a great experience that comes at an expense to one's personal duties and goals and, frankly, one that I can no longer afford. Though bittersweet, I will resign the role of student body president and all MSUM student representation at midnight of January 1, 2006 to pursue personal interests and education at Bemidji State University. Vice President James Cailao will become president and lead Student Senate through the next semester. I have great confidence in Vice President Cailao and believe he and Student Senate will smoothly transition, diligently continue to build upon Student Senate's foundation, and successfully execute programs and campaigns that empower the MSUM student experience. I will continue to consult Vice President Cailao in his new position and Student Senate as deemed necessary by the organization and offer any knowledge or advice that may be helpful. This change in leadership will open the vice presidency to any interested MSUM student. I leave Student Senate and MSUM with one final observation and some advice for the future. Apathy is a degenerative disease that plagues the student community. The idea that students are powerless within our world is ludicrous! All things in this world began as a dream. Someone dreamt up every invention and discovery. Be hopeful in your dreams and discover changes that better humanity wherever you roam. Practice implementation of your convictions today by rising up on this campus, getting involved, and being the changes you wish to see! We are either solutions or problems; only our attitudes and actions define which we are. Furthermore, do not be defeatists nor be you cynics. Trust in yourselves and others, despite small-scale differences. We are the future leaders of this country. Create systems together that accept differences and scrutinize those things that attempt to oppress students as a collective group by standing united with one another though the same acceptance and compassion you dream to receive. Thank you for the invaluable experiences. I will execute the lessons I've learned throughout my life with eternal gratitude for my time spent with each of you at MSUM. Sincerely, William H. Nov 5, 2005- Senate approved a rate increase for the Drive-A-Dragon taxi program. Starting next semester, the cost will be $4 per rider. The program needed a change because it was going through its budget at an unprecedented rate. This change will keep the same days of the week (every day of the week) and the same times (9pm to 6:30am) as the previous program. The original proposal, which was voted down by senate, would have limited the program to Fridays and Saturdays only. The new proposal also eliminated bar to bar rides.
