Student Senate

Student Senate Minutes – February 7th, 2008

Meeting called to order at 5:02 pm

Chair Norris moves, Chair Jenson seconds to approve Agenda (approved)

Chair Norris moves, proxy Johannessohn seconds to approve Minutes (approved)

Norris – Just wanted to say thank you to the secretary.

Jenson – A student went to the Nemzek weight room, had to show their ID.  Senator Olson knows more about it.

Olson – he was upset he had to show his id.  It was a case of them not knowing if he is a student or not because the athletes would not.  Gave him contact info to further the info.

Abey – Campus parking – a few tickets she didn't know about and she got booted as well.

Ohren – There's no feminine product dispense in Lommen.

Morse – As well as in Weld – bathroom downstairs.  It's in horrible disarray.  There's water leaking from one toilet, and no soap in one dispenser.

Olson – Student claimed that a university should not be biased like that.  Said it was a first come first thing here.

Norris – weren't republicans?

Jenson – Public building, so no issue there.

Garman – We had the SNSA organization meeting last Monday.  Do more to make the graduate programs known more to undergrads.  We'd like a sponsored orientation program.  It's good networking for graduate students and builds relationships with other grad students.  I just wanted to see if we're interested in some relationship building between the programs and undergrads.

Weber – Refer that to marketing.

Situma – People are saying there's something going on with campus security and international students.  Trying to get rid of international students and not hiring IS.  Sounds like discrimination.

Weber – Diversity.

Jenson – Trying to look for more criminal justice majors and trying to   not hiring just as many whatever majors, that may be a reason.  They're trying to increase longevity of security force.  Not sure if they were one year students.

Reports

Advisor Sollinger – No report

Ohren – Anything has happened as far as the universal health insurance?  Do you know if we're participating in it?

Sollinger – to do anything for next year would take longer than three months to get that going.  But I certainly know people were interested in seeing that implemented at some point, but not anytime soon.

Abey – Karen Lester interested in the idea.

Norris – Told a few meetings back that there would be a committee forming for the renovation of this building.  Senate was told to appoint students to it, and I was wondering if we would get information and who we should direct appointees to.  There's no framework in place, and if there is we haven't been given any information on it.

Sollinger – I don't think there's been a committee formed yet.  If you want to give me the names Warren will be back a week from Monday and I can let him know when he gets back.

Johannessohn – Bring up with VP Wiese.  There has been talk about furthering the cohabitation of Neumaier.  I heard that Beth Connor wrote up a draft, wondering where that was coming, and if you could bring that to the next meeting if you don't have anything on it right now.

Garman – Remodeling of this building.  Dean Adler – mentioned something about possibly an area being added or brought into the picture for graduate students or have that built in along with that.  Is there any truth to that for plans?  Some organizations have their own buildings on other campuses so it'd be nice for us to get something where we could have an area.

Treasurer Morse

This week I balanced the budget.  We have $1,013.18 and $591.42 tied up in motions.

This week I went to SABC and met with the election committee – everything is looking great so far.  Thanks to all who attended the caucus!  It went very well for us all!

Vice President Zeiher

I attended UPBC, Exec and SOAC.  I'm working on the retreat and the ARS as well.

President Weber

I met with Advisor Sollinger, attended SABC, attended UPBC and helped with the Super Tuesday party.  It was a successful event.  We received media coverage, interviews with myself and campus rep Lovcik.

I attended the caucus and was impressed by the large turnout.  Thank you to all that helped increase awareness of this event.  The meet and discuss is scheduled for February 28th, and there's a signup sheet for questions going around.

I attended the MSUSA conference.  Despite some confusion overall I was very happy with the level of Moorhead's participation both in delegates and the workshops.

I would like to stress attendance.  Find a proxy if you cannot be at meeting or have to leave early.  Also remember if you attend different organizational meetings on committee you can make up a couple of attendance points.  And, Matt Pierce resigned his seat.

Norris – For future trips, I would suggest MapQuest.

Haugen – MapQuest has gotten me lost twice.

Staves – You can use my GPS next time.

Situma – Am I getting another committee member now that mine resigned?

Secretary Randall

I did the minutes and attendance.  I haven't been feeling well as of late.  Please get reports in to me as soon as possible.

Moen – Where's my new nameplate?  Let it be noted I paid for the new nameplate.

Campus Affairs – Chair Brungardt

I did more work on the presentation for the retreat.  Started working on advertising ideas and what to put in the display window.  If any committees are interested in advertising their committee in the display window let me know and I'll get you the date.

Situma – That's the same thing that we are doing.

Weber – The issue that we are running into, we only get 2 windows per semester.  We need one for elections or if we're over our limit or whatever.  We might have to…

Ellsworth – I have one reserved for Diversity Week.

Weber – Everyone that has a window reserved come to me with dates so we can get this all resolved.  Let me or exec know in the future.

Committee on Committees – Chair Norris

We convened throughout the week.  I started sorting through the email responses regarding primary committee appointments.  Thank you for responding.  And I made the appointment list for this week.

Marketing – Chair Situma

I have the three shirt designs.  Tell me which you like and what you want.  I also need the money for the pictures from last semester.  I'm working on getting the biographies done for the website.  Also, I need nominations for student senator of the month so I can get that in.

Legislative and Internal Affairs – Chair Jenson

We went over the SCIC language.  I will have the motion up for approval.  I'm still waiting on constitutions, if any.  I need City Council questions, I went to MSUSA this past weekend, and the caucus went over very well.

Tuition Fees and Oversight Committee – Chair Randall

Jean Hollaar will be attending the committee meeting Friday, February 15th at 1:30, so if any can make it, that would be great.  She'll be attending the Senate meeting following that.

Diversity – Chair Abey

I met with Veronica Michaels to speak about the English 111 class and I spoke with Karen Lester to discuss the student medical insurance that might be offered through MnSCU.

MSUSA Campus Representative Lovcik

Thank you to those who attended the MSUSA conference last weekend.  We had a very productive group that was very involved at delegates.  Thanks to everyone that helped out at our Super Tuesday Party, I think it was a success.  If you are interested in Lobby Core and haven't had a chance to sign up please do so tonight or talk to me ASAP.  I have some lists going around tonight for Lobby Core memberse, please fill out this information and get it back to me before you leave tonight.  What information would you like put up on the MSUSA website?

The first Lobby Core trip will be Friday, February 29th.  Those attending will be Srilan, Troy, Jennifer, Jered, and possibly Dane so far.  I need to know if this date will work for Ashley, Justin, and Tony so let me know ASAP.

MSUSA Diversity Representative Ellsworth

Brungardt – Hasn't the first of February already passed?

Ellsworth – yeah, the 21st of February.

MSUSA Financial Aid Intern Brungardt

Set up time to talk over ideas for campaign with Emily Doman Friday over the phone.  I received an email with updates from the February conference so I can incorporate that information into the event/advertising I'm putting together.

Special Projects Assistant Ohren

(No Report)

Elections – Chair Camargo

(Report Wouldn't Open)

Old Business

Resolution – Minnesota House Bill 3848

Morse – How did it happen at MSUSA?

Weber – A motion in opposition to this one was sponsored by Moorhead – so that's what they made.  The senate can support it.

Called to Question – Moen – Ellsworth

Vote (motion fails)

New Business

Motion – Thank You – Sponsored by Exec

Weber – Talking to Doug Hamilton this morning.  These two students, there was a fire at the house they were renting.  The homeowner got one of them out, so I think it would be good to extend a thank you and work with Doug Hamilton for something more formal, like a plaque.  This is just thanking him and to work to a more formal thank you.

Ellsworth – Why are you working with Doug Hamilton?  He's a big PR person on campus.

Weber – Between us and the administration and it can only help to work with him on it.  I think it would be beneficial.

Haugen – He's one of the most recognized people in the community.  He has brought his kindness and consideration and integral to the process.

Garman – Do we know how this fire started?

Weber – From the advocate, they think it was mechanical, pipes or something.

Garman – Not trying to doubt, but when I was a younger college student…did this guy cause the fire perhaps?

Weber – No he was a state trooper.

Sollinger – What happened was he and his wife had four or five children, bi-level house.  The two women lived above the garage.  The week where it was 35 below, so I'm thinking the water heater or some special or additional heater.  It was working overtime.  It was an explosion, basically.  One was in her car trying to start it.  It started in the hallway.  So he went into the house and called her name to come toward him and he got her out of the house.

Garman – I'd say he should get a plaque, yeah.

Motion – Vote (Approved)

Motion – Mr. MSUM – Sponsored by Exec

Morse – a mock pageant and Student Senate has been involved.  It's a really fun event we can contribute money to and it contributes to a great cause as well.

Staves – How was this kid picked?

Morse – Works at Friendship Inc, and a lot of mentally disabled kids, and one kid is in desperate need.

Staves – Any information on the type of hearing aid he is getting?

Morse – Going to be around 2.00 or 3.00 to get in.

Ohren – Projected attendance?

Morse – Are you talking about past attendance?  I don't think it's going to raise 1500.00 for it, I'm not sure.

Ohren – If we're going to give tem 100.00 to advertise and only 50 people show up, I feel that is a lot.

Olson – Who are these Mr.'s?  Where do they come from?

Morse – Different orgs nominate people.  CAB and Delta Zeta will be making the signs, so I have faith in their ability to pull people in.

Garman – Is there some way to find out how many people were there last year?

Morse – We can figure it out.  It's in March, so there will be time.

Garman – We can do a donation, instead.  We should go the most cost effective way.

Weber – If there was need to do more research we can table the motion.

Ohren – Williams – Table the motion

Morse – Find out how many people will be coming to the event?

Ohren – How many people have attended in the past?

Garman – Are we the only ones giving money for the advertising?

Morse – CAB and Delta Zeta will be.

Vote on Tabling (Passed)

Motion – Elections Committee – Sponsored by Elections

Camargo – I've been looking at the costs, and table tents have already been made and cut, and dorm stuffers I'll have them made at Copies Plus as well.  The person who's doing this is a close friend of mine, so the design costs are being waived.

Ohren – Is this just for filing or the election as well?

Camargo – I really want to get this out and want people involved in this process.  People are probably going to be more interested since it's an election year.  I probably won't ask for more money until we get closer to elections.

Randall – Advertisements are fantastic.

Vote – Passes

Motion – Flowers for Winona Senate

Weber – Jared Stene passed away and thought it would be appropriate to send them flowers.  Vice President Zeiher's mom footed the bill, so this is reimbursing that act.

Vote (Passed)

Motion – Sustainable Campus Initiative Committee – Sponsored by Leg/Internal

Norris – Pretty self explanatory.  Any questions, I'll take them.

Ohren – Can you re-read it?

Norris – A couple weeks ago when Wiese brought us the proposal, in leg we reviewed it and we couldn't think of anything.  We thought the proposed language was solid.  As it goes around if you guys can think of anything to have added to it we can amend the language.  But as it sits, we think it's solid.

Vote (Passed)

Motion – Mr. MSUM Nomination

Olson – We should nominate, but I'm okay with tabling.  We've got to nominate somebody from the organization.

Ohren – Well, we traditionally nominate somebody, but I'm not sure what the qualifications are.  Yeah, this is a good idea and getting people involved.  We should have somebody nominated.

Weber – Is there any entry fee?

Norris – Johannessohn – Table Motion (1N, 1A)

Motion – Open Discussion – Intramural field (lighting and additional funding)

Ohren – to see what everyone thinks about this and if you'd be behind possibly supporting this.  The fields, soccer field, football field, practice fields, club sports or intramurals can use them even during downtime.  I'm researching maintenance of those fields.  Director did mention that compaction was a huge issue.  If compacted, more injuries.  Intramural fields are used 5x more often.  Haven't gotten all the research yet or how often that is done, but also there is no lighting and there are games later on in the evening but cannot because it is unlit.  I'm furthering my research on this.

Morse – Something we need to explore.

Weber – We need to discuss about doing something.

Camargo – I know that it was always maintained until snow.  They mark them for whatever they need to be used.  Are you looking for mowing?

Ohren – Aerating the fields, if those were better maintained the other sports could use those fields.  Get more access.

Norris – Call to Question

Morse – It's a possible initiative for funding.

Ohren – Spoke to Wiese about this and exploring the possibility.  It would be getting special initiative funding through Barden's office.  It should have its own category or initiatives or whatever.  I haven't worked that out.

Camargo – Thought about going to the facilities and ground committee?

Ohren – Going to the committee, speak with him about that, but definitely a possibility.

Camargo – Head groundskeeper, it would be really important to talk to him.  He runs it in the summer, spring and fall and it'd be good to get him on your good side.

Ohren – He is looking into seeing those fields better utilized, but it is a maintenance issue.  Another problem is that athletic dept doesn't actually pay for the fields.  With better maintenance can better utilize those spaces.  A lot of the club sports rent space off of campus to hold their games, especially in the evenings.  It is a real problem that they are running into.  They actually rent space over at NDSU because there is no lighting.

Norris – Close Discussion – Ellsworth (passed)

Norris – Brungardt – Open CoC Nominations (passed)

Norris – Moen – Close CoC Nominations (passed 1A)

Points for the Good of the Order

Haugen – Senator Butrum has awesome purple socks.

Situma – Tie between Camargo and Moen.

Weber – Want to thank everybody that helped out with Super Tuesday that we did in conjunction at MSUSA.  The youth vote did turn out this time, always good to see.  MSUSA, I will be traveling Tuesday to the Cities to speak at a bonding hearing, found out about it today.  I may be meeting with some legislators, so if you have questions let me know before then.

Garman – Bonding issue?

Weber – Money, how much they're going to give, basic run of the mill.  Lommen, the Library.

Camargo –We should meet after we discuss the board with Jered.

Weber – Do something after the meeting tonight.

Situma – Senator Camargo has been nominated.

Ellsworth – Johannessohn - adjourn
