Approval of the Minutes

  • 9-29-05 minutes approved unanimously

Public Hearing

Strohmeier

  • I am here for yesterdays Text Book Action Day.  There were a lot of creative responses for "What else you could have spent book money on."

  • The next Call In Day will be October 11th.  Representative Colin Peterson will vote against HR609.  We are now shifting the focus to Norm Coleman!

  • Budget Reconciliation - Congress uses to quickly get through cuts in the budget.  It is a process used with a bill to cut money.

Kopel

  • Health and Wellness Center Liaison

  • I am a student advisor to the Peer education program at Hendrix

Mihal

  • I work at the Write Cite and we were having trouble logging in to the network and couldn't print.  I didn't know how to direct the students to the nearest computer lab.  Is there a directory somewhere that shows where all of those are?

Wilson-Mattson

  • I talked to an upset student about Weld classroom.  The doors to the theatre are never closed and often disrupt classes.

Hussain

  • The computer labs get very heated and people get headaches.  The students then come to the lab assistant who has no medicines.

Pugsley

  • Subs and Sweets has a broken register and Sen. Smolley and I had to stand in line a long time.

  • Also, I have a class in a room next to Conteh and our class is often disrupted as well!

Trenbeath

  • I have a class right outside the Library and it is just as cold in class as it is outside.  And the thermostat didn't work.

  • Also in that same room there was a loud beeping noise and the teacher couldn't concentrate so class was out early.

Bard

  • September 30th KMSC set up for a radio show outside and we made arrangements with the Physical Plant.  But we never got the power we were told we would have and the tables were not brought out on time.

Czapiewska

  • There was an ear piercing sound in the Library when I was trying to study.

Smolley

  • The construction sent an email apologizing for all the noise.

Hussain

  • It is almost Ramadan and a lot of students on campus eat at Kise which closes at 6:30 but the fast doesn't open until 7:00.

Haken

  • People in Nelson are saying that the elevators make weird noises.

Welle

  • The noises are normal, it is also normal to get stuck awhile at times.

Reports  *not given during Senate

Advisor Wiese

  • No reports given during Senate

Justin Schwegel (Treasurer)

James Cailao (Vice President)

  • Report

Billy Holmes (President)

  • Senate notes:

  • I listened in on the most proactive Senate committees I’ve ever seen; keep up the great work we have a lot to do!!!!

  • I’ve also seen people working hard during their office hours.

  •  Please make sure that you fill out an office hour slip so Sec. Pugsley can keep accurate attendance.  If you don’t fill out a slip you will likely be marked absent.

  • During your office hour there is plenty to do.  TFOC needs help formulating taxi data.  Ask Sen. Ellefson or Chair Welle how you can help.

  •  Please remember to check your mailboxes.  I and others use those to communicate with notes or leave materials.  Please do not use them as a storage unit.

  • Ask Sen. Elkin, Sec. Pugsley, or S.P.A.M. to help find a folder or binder for you if necessary.

  •  Motions

  • The new Senators are speaking up and getting involved; good job!

  • Let’s take this one step further

  • Those of you who sponsor motions, please look for a second from someone who typically does not make motions

  • We are all teachers and learners.  Those that are confident Senators please help to teach others to be as strong as you.

  • Committee Reports

  • Chairs, please remember to send your reports to Sec. Pugsley each week.

  • It is a ridiculous waste of people’s time to consult V.P. Cailao to overturn absences unnecessarily marked by Sec. Pugsley because chairs neglected to send their reports.

  • Also, incorrect attendance could result in members being unduly brought up for removal due to absences.

  • Committee members, remind your chair to turn your committee report each week.

  • Attendance

  • A few members are dangerously close to their absence limits

  • Be sure to review your attendance points each week which are included in the minutes.

  • If you believe there is an error, consult with Sec. Pugsley and V.P. Cailao to make any necessary changes.

  • Office Cleanliness:

  • I don’t want to work in a disarrayed office and I’m sure you don’t either.

  •  Please find a place to put your things and keep them there when you’re not working on them.

  • This is everyone’s office and it shows disrespect for others by leaving your things scattered about to the office.

  • Messes are displeasing and an obstruction of other’s efficient use of time by cleaning up other people’s messes before they can begin their own projects.

  • Sen. Elkin is permitted to keep cleaning by example until everyone understands the importance or picking up after themselves.

  • Senate Raffle

  • To purchase tickets for $.25 or get details contact V.P. Cailao

  • Public Hearing

  • Glad that concerns are being brought to Public Hearing.

  • Continue to be the eyes and ears of issues that concern students by keeping up the good work here!

  • Midwest Student Leadership Conference

  • A few Senator’s are attending the MWSLC next weekend

  • I look forward each of you bringing back the things you learn to enrich Student Senate

  • Though you are away from campus and out of the state, remember that you are on Senate business and so must be professional representatives of the MSUM student body

  • Some of you may have noticed my editorial in today’s Advocate.  I felt a prompt response in regard to humanitarian responsibility was in the best interest the student body.

  • I did not receive an office hour slip from Sec. Pugsley this week.  No hours to report.

  • University Committee work:

  • Sustainable Campus Committee

  • Getting closer to calling a meeting

  • Almost all student seats are filled

  • Consulted with Dr. Karen Branden from the Sociology Dept. to be the IFO member on the committee.

  • Emailed my recommendation of Dr. Karen Branden to IFO President, Cindy Phillips.

  • Proxy Advisor Wilson will also serve on this committee.

  • Please ask me or Proxy Advisor Wilson any questions you may have about this committee.  If you would like to serve as a member please talk to Chair Obach and apply online.

  • Alcohol Task Force

  • Looking at ways to curb binge drinking

  • Social norming

  • Rewriting policies

  • Please take a look at MSUM’s alcohol policies and if you have any suggestions for the committee please let me know.

  • Federal law mandates the university administer the CORE survey which measures alcohol and drug use among students

  • The task at hand is finding a way to survey a random sample

  • MSUM is hosting the MnSCU 2005 Student Affairs Conference on Nov. 18

  • Major themes are alcohol and conduct policies

  • Wellness Center

  • A few weeks ago, Senate and the Wellness Committee approved the general location, layout and further schematic planning of H&C model 12A

  • From that approval, H&C made another model, 12B

  • While on campus this week, H&C spoke with faculty and students

  • Overall 12B seemed to appeal most to everyone, more importantly to students

  • The committee unanimously requested that H&C develop the design of 12B

  • The committee also requested details concerning the addition of a turf court

  • A turf court is in the interest of the OSA and the club sports of our campus

  • Financial feasibility will rely on additional donations and/or student contribution as this is not included nor feasible in the project’s current budget

  • SABC

  • The daycare center is in need of funding and has requested that SABC find a way to help

  • The committee is contemplating if this is an appropriate use of student fees

  • Science Lab Building

  • It was great to see everyone who came out today to support the sciences and the opening of our great new facility

  • More specifically, thank you to Senator Ascheman for representing the College of Social and Natural Sciences by being a ribbon cutter

  • Thank you Senator Wilson-Mattson and VP Cailao for attending President Barden’s luncheon

  • And finally thank you to the great number of Senate members and employees who attended the social after we adjourned.

If you haven’t checked out the SLB do so.  It’s a truly remarkable addition

Maurina

  • Legislative and Internal affairs gave away cards for people who helped with things!  That was sweet!

Wilson-Mattson

  • Leg is doing voter registration with PEPP.  There will be 2 tables set up in the dorms.  I need one person Monday evening at 6:00pm

Elkin

  • It is awesome that so many people spoke in Public Hearing.  That is where we get most of our work and can do things about problems on campus.

  • Mihal is amazing!

Schwegel

  • We should limit reports so we can get done early all of the time!

Mihal

  • There are people that put notes in other peoples mailboxes, and sometimes there is no room...check your mailboxes.

  • I put profile sheets in mailboxes.  Fill those out so I know all of the email addresses, I might accidentally delete you!

Cailao

  • Student Senate raffle right now, tickets are one for a quarter and there is great prizes!

Schwegel

  • The contact list doesn't have a number for Billy

Holmes

  • I have no phone

Elkin

  • Senate is clean and pretty...I organized and cleaned the office.

  • I know some people are upset but if you keep it clean and don't leave your stuff laying all over the place, then you won't have problems!

Welle

  • Sorry I am crabby sometimes in the meetings and the offices.

  • "There is a good chance I could be emotionally unstable."

Mihal

  • Sorry to Senate for all my things in the office, I never realized I had so much stuff there.  But I am working on it!

  • If you have late night Senate emergencies, call me and I can get Billy for you, he lives in the same building.

Holmes

  • Get reports to Grace by Monday

  • I want to reinforce Elkin's comment on cleaning.  I told her to keep doing it, so she has my permission.

  • I am sending my report on the list serv.

  • Some people are close to attendance points.  When you get to 12 I will announce you being brought up for removal at the next meeting.
