El día de los muertos

(The Day of the Dead)

The Spanish Club at Minnesota State University has been taking the opportunity to share our love of Hispanic Culture with the Fargo-Moorhead Community through various cultural and educational events for years. One of our most popular events every beginning of November has been the celebration of the Día de los muertos or Day of the Dead.

The celebration of the Day of the Dead is not celebrated in every Latin American country. The countries that celebrate this holiday most are Mexico and Ecuador. For them it is more akin to our Memorial Day than to Halloween in the United States of America. Here at MSUM, we like to set up a traditional Altar with the elements available to us. While Marigolds (Cempazuchitl) is hard to come by in the Fall in Minnesota, we usually use artificial flowers or other yellow and orange flowers in place of the traditional flower of the Day of the Dead. We usually have Pan de Muerto - an anise flavored mexican bread, guaguas - bread in the shape of a little child and colada morada - a traditional Ecuadorian drink made from fruit and purple corn flour. We also have games and activities for people of all ages who are interested in learning more about this holiday including papel picado, lotería and decorating the guaguas with icing.
