General Information
Minnesota State University Moorhead (MSUM) is located in Moorhead, MN. The program began with one professor and had its first graduates in 1962. Since then, the department has grown to include 14 faculty/staff, an average of 30 graduate students and 100 undergraduate students. The program has been accredited by the Council on Academic Accreditation, American Speech Language and Hearing Association (ASHA) since the early 1960s. The Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences (SLHS) program is the sole department located in Grier Hall. The SLHS program has outgrown the current building and has one classroom in a nearby science building and the Regional Assistive Technology Center is located in one of the adjacent buildings. Opportunities for clinical practice are provided for students at the undergraduate and graduate level.
The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences and a Master of Science in Speech Language Pathology both focusing on communication disorders. A pre-audiology track is available for students who wish to continue their education to obtain their Master of Audiology. Students can also earn a minor in Speech/Language/Hearing Sciences.
The program has always received reasonable to generous support from administration, including periodic grants to upgrade equipment and increase faculty positions. Approximately 7 years ago our clinic became the affiliated clinic of the local SERvice TO MAnkind (SERTOMA), a service organization, which continues to provide generous support. A generous grant from the Dakota Medical Foundation has allowed substantial expansion of our program to fulfill unmet service needs in the community.
