The national trend of rejecting the German language and pro-German sentiment was strongly felt in Clay County, Minnesota. The demonstration of Anti-Germanism in Clay County can be seen in the local newspapers, the Clay County Herald, the Hawley Herald, and in a time capsule that was found in a corner stone during the destruction of the 1919 Hawley High School building.
