Horses are most often associated with work on farms.  Clay County's beginnings a re as an agricultural society.  Horses were a key part of survival in this rural area.  They served as out early cars and tractors.  They were used to cultivate, plant and combine the fields of the Red River Valley.  Horses were also the way farming families traveled to towns.  The yearly agricultural census shows an increase in farm machinery during the first half of the 20th Century.  As more farmers investing in tractors and combines, the need for horses to perform farm labor declined.  There were many farm auctions that advertised horses for sale, as they became pleasure, instead of work animals.
