While horses are most often associated with farm work, they were also vital parts of city businesses.  Types of business that involved horses were liveries and blacksmiths, places that sold horses as well.  Even if businesses were directly horses related, most business still depended on horses in order to work.  For example, horses were used to transport merchandise from business to business.  Horses were also a large part of the transportation business.  Horse-drawn stagecoaches were used to transport people from train stations to their destinations.  People living in Clay County depended on horses as a source of income. The 1902 Fargo-Moorhead City Directory lists 10 liveries, 10 blacksmiths, and 4 veterinarians in the two towns.
