Knights of Pythias

Freemasons

The Knight of Pythias is a national fraternity that was founded in Washington D.C. on February 19, 1864.  The organization was founded on the principles of brotherly love in part to assist in the healing of emotional and patriotic wounds. These wounds occurred between the  North and south after the Civil War.  The order supports the notion of friendship, charity, and benevolence.

The Knights of Pythias was chartered by Congress as the first American Order to receive such a honor.

The principles of the Knights of Pythias are inspired by the drama of Damon and Pythias, by John Banim.

The Knights of Pythias in Clay County had a shorter life than the other fraternities surveyed.  The order left the city of Moorhead around 1922. Still, the organization served the community with many notable members in local government, business, and other middle-class ventures.
