Ancient Order of United Workers

Freemasons      The AOUW was founded by a Freemason after the Civil War. John Jordan Upchurch founded the society in 1868, in Meadville, Pennsylvania. His goal was to bridge the difference between an employer and employee.

This fraternity's roots are different than the others examined, because the base for its creation was the focus on a Fraternal Benefit Society.

A member of the AOUW would pay one dollar to an insurance fund to cover the sum of no less than five hundred dollars in the case of a members death.

The Ancient Order of United Workmen (AOUW), is the only fraternity of the timeline that is not one of the three largest fraternities of the nation. Yet, this organization enjoyed success in Clay county.  The few members that the AOUW had, held an influencing position for a greater duration than others.
