Bandolier Bags
Clay County Historical Soc.

Loom Design

Beadwork has been around for hundreds of years, but work as detailed and extensive as the bandolier bag did not appear until the second half of the 19th century. This bag is smaller that most, and was designed on a loom. This style is easier to do, but is restrictive on the creativity, because it forms by rows and columns. This bag has a wide variety of color, but is dull. This may be due to the time the bag was made, around 1880-1895 or less access to materials. This bag has English and Christian influence. It also displays a common early “Ottertail” design on the borders.
