Bandolier bags were popular through the 1890’s-1930’s, but prior to the late 1800’s, there were bags and pouches carried for many purposes. I presume these bags were carried for dress, prestige, wealth, religion and for presentation at Pow Wows or in photos. The pouch of the bags rests at the hip and tassels move with the flow of the individual. At the start of the bandolier era, only men were wearing them, but over time women and children are seen with them too. Women are traditionally known to do the beadwork, but men did too. Bandolier bags are predominately found in this region, but they are also found in the East and South with such tribes as Cherokee and Delaware.
