Information for Secondary and K-12 Teaching Majors

MSUM offers secondary education licensure programs in 9 content areas:

• Licensure covering grades 5-12 is offered in mathematics, social studies, communications/language arts, and the sciences.
  
  

Licensure covering grades K-12 is offered in art, music, physical education, and health.

Licensure covering grades PK-12 is offered in foreign languages.

Add-on licensure in English as a second language is expected to be available in Fall 2008.

To earn licensure in one of these areas, a student must complete three requirements: 

1.  liberal studies

2.  a major in the teaching field

3.  the secondary education core classes, including student teaching.

Details about each category are provided below.

The secondary education coordinator provides general advising on the education core.  The student's official advisor, however, is usually the program coordinator in the major subject area.

"Old" Liberal Studies & New Dragon Core Requirements This is the first of three basic requirements for a Secondary or K-12 teaching degree.	Secondary & K-12 Majors The second requirement for a Secondary or K-12 teaching degree is a college major in the teaching field.	Secondary Education Core Classes Successful completion of core education classes fulfills the last of three basic requirements for a Secondary or K-12 teaching degree.
	Student Organizations for Teacher Education	Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL)  Option for K-12 ESL Licensure when added to a BS in Education.
