- Congratulations to Professor Cristobal Silva of Florida State University as the recipient of our tenth annual Essay Prize for “Appropriating Epidemiology: Tisquantum and the Etiology of Buried Plague.” This entry was judged the best paper on an early American topic, broadly conceived, presented at any one of the following conferences: the Society of Early Americanists’ Fifth Biennial conference, the American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies, or that of one of its affiliates during the academic year 2007-2008. Thank you, as well to the Essay Prize Committee and its chair, Anna Mae Duane, for overseeing this
