Project Guidelines

Projects must follow the rules as set forth for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. These are available on the web at http://www.sciserv.org/isef/teachers/rules_regulations.asp. Specific questions will be answered by email at SRC@sciserv.org.

Special notes and changes this year:

  1. Projects involving Human subjects, nonhuman vertebrates, rDNA, pathogenic or potentially pathogenic agents, controlled substances, and human and animal vertebrate tissue REQUIRE PRIOR APPROVAL BY AN IRB/SRC before experimentation begins.
  2. For Human Subjects, the informed consent form (4B) is REQUIRED for all subjects in projects involving more than minimal risk and is STRONGLY RECOMMENDED for all projects. A copy of any test, survey, or questionnaire MUST BE provided for parental review for subjects under 18 years of age.

ALL PROJECTS MUST MEET WITH SPONSOR AND COMPLETE CHECKLIST FOR THE ADULT SPONSOR BEFORE EXPERIMENTATION.

ALL STUDENTS MUST HAVE THE RESEARCH PLAN (1A) AND RESEARCH PLAN ATTACHMENT COMPLETED. IF CHANGES ARE MADE AFTER IRB OR SRC APPROVAL, THE CHANGES MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE IRB/SRC FOR RE-APPROVAL PRIOR TO EXPERIMENTATION.

The use of photographs of people requires Informed Consent Form, 4B.

All are urged to consult the ISEF rules site for detailed information.

Project Guidelines - Checks for Legal Display

  • Dimensions - no larger than 30 " deep, 48 " wide, 108 " high including table.
  • No living organisms, preserved vertebrates or invertebrates or plant material (except dried plant materials permanently encased in acrylic).
  • No human or animal food.
  • No chemicals displayed including water, poisons, drugs etc.
  • No sharp items - needles, syringes etc.
  • No flames
  • No batteries with open top cells
  • No pictures of "dead" vertebrates being processed.
  • No soil samples unless encased in acrylic.
  • No active Internet or e-mail connections are allowed as part of displaying or operating the project.

EACH PROJECT MUST DISPLAY:

  • Abstract
  • Colored SRC Approval slip
  • Informed consent forms (4B) of any people whose photographs are displayed except exhibitor and exhibitor's family.
