Minnesota State University Moorhead’s School of Business is offering several new programs that are geared to new graduates, returning students and working professionals. The School of Business is accredited by AACSB (Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business), the premier accrediting agency for business schools worldwide. Approximately five percent of business schools in the world are accredited by AACSB.
The School of Business advisory board and area business leaders meet regularly to discuss the workforce needs of the business community. These discussions, along with the vision of Marsha Weber, Dean of the College of Business & Industry, aid in providing an educational path for students of myriad backgrounds and experiences.
“It is critical for business schools to offer cutting-edge programs to provide students with the skills they need to be successful,” said Dean Marsha Weber. “We truly appreciate the input and advice we have received from local and regional business professionals that has led us to some very exciting curriculum changes.”
Below is a quick review of what’s new.
The only program of its kind in the tri-state area, the M.S. in Accounting and Finance is designed as a fifth year extension of the undergraduate programs in accounting and finance for new graduates or professionals in these fields. Students completing the program will be well prepared to pursue careers in investment management or accounting, and to obtain professional designations like Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or Certified Public Accountant (CPA).
“By combining the depth of study into both disciplines it offers an unparalleled breadth of functional business skills that not only expand potential career opportunities along either path, but enhances the range of knowledge a student can bring to any position, greatly improving opportunities for career advancement and success,” said Mark Anderson, president and CEO of BlackRidge Financial.
The Fargo-Moorhead metropolitan area has world-class physicians, hospitals and research facilities, as well as many regional companies providing services or products for the medical industry. The MBA-Healthcare Management emphasis is an executive leadership track designed for high-level healthcare managers such as CFOs, COOs, CMOs, legal officers, healthcare software developers, healthcare suppliers and healthcare business owners, among others.
This program will be offered in a hybrid format, where much of the coursework is online, with limited face-to-face meetings during the semester. This flexibility will allow students who do not live in the immediate area to pursue a master’s degree more easily. Students attending full time can finish the degree in four semesters.
After successfully receiving AACSB accreditation, the School of Business looked at the unmet need of graduate business offerings in our area. The School is eager to reintroduce the general MBA program to its roster of program offerings, which is designed for anyone wanting a general business administration graduate program. The executive MBA is a hybrid program with much of the coursework online with limited face-to-face meetings per course. The program can be completed in one calendar year, fall through summer.
It is critical for organizations to understand and leverage business analytics to inform and guide intelligent and effective decision making in all operational and strategic activities. This program introduces skills, techniques and applications to facilitate the use of data to generate business intelligence. Students will extract, explore and analyze data to develop predictive models, discover meaningful patterns and generate rules for decision-making.
The Entrepreneurship Certificate or Minor is open to any major and no prerequisites are required. The five core classes focus on business environment and operations, with the culmination of a real-life business plan. The minor is intended for current non-business students to strengthen their business acumen, while the certificate may be a better choice for returning students or community members.
This program will consist of four classroom courses and an educational trip to China. It will focus on China’s worldview while exploring the country’s rich history, economy and culture, helping business professionals become familiar with the nation’s unique international business practices.
“Since China’s market is growing, it’s important to understand its business objectives, which is why this program is beneficial to students, businesses and community members,” said Ruth Lumb, an MSUM marketing professor who teaches at Xi’an University of Science and Technology in China.
This degree is for people who have an associate in arts degree or others who’ve made significant progress toward their business degree, but still have coursework to complete. All courses are offered online and can be completed in two years, depending on the student’s status when admitted to MSUM.
