Advantages in the School of Business
The Center for Business, a spacious classroom building completed in 1995, is home to the School of Business and includes 11 comfortable classrooms, two student study rooms, a student lounge, and three computer labs.
Accounting faculty hold graduate degrees and approximately 70 percent hold the highest degree available in their discipline. Most of the accounting faculty are Certified Public Accountants.
Business Administration faculty hold graduate degrees and approximately 90 percent hold the highest academic degree available in their discipline. A number of members of the faculty provide consulting services to businesses on an ongoing basis. The faculty also generously gives its time to the community by providing professional services on an ad-hoc, volunteer basis.
Most of the accountants have worked in either the auditing or tax practice areas of public accounting, while business law faculty have consulted with either profit or not-for-profit organizations. Together they bring practical real world experience to the classroom. Collectively, the faculty is engaged in scholarly activity. Their research can be found in peer-reviewed journals, proceedings, and presentations, which they have made internationally nationally, and regionally.
MSUM's business classes are relatively small, averaging 40 students at the introductory level and 30 students at the upper level, giving students the personal attention they deserve.
Peer tutoring is available for students to improve classroom work as well as to increase personal skills.
Students may participate in organizations that can provide opportunities for meeting students with similar interests, learning more about accounting and business careers, and developing leadership skills.
Internships are strongly encouraged because potential employers look favorably on work experience, and some employers use internships as a tool for recruiting full-time employees.
Numerous scholarships are awarded annually to School of Business majors.
