Student Council for Exceptional Children

What is SCEC?

SCEC is the student chapter of the national Council for Exceptional Children organization. We are a group for education majors to develop as professionals.

Why join SCEC?

*  To learn more about the field of special education (topics for meetings will be: interviewing tips from local SPED directors, collaborating with parents – a parental perspective on SPED, and where are we going next semester?)

*  Great opportunity for professional development

*  To gain volunteer experience

*  Join the CEC at a discounted rate that will carry through your first year as a teacher

*  We have a lot of fun and learn a lot too!

*  To receive professional education journals in the field directly to your mailbox!

*  Build your resume (volunteer experience as well as being part of a national organization for teachers)

*  Become a leader of a student organization... a new executive board will be chosen in March, as well as other roles to help with fundraising, designing new t-shirts, help organizing events, help us build a MSUM SCEC website, and many more!

What does SCEC do?

* Monthly professional development meetings (Feb. 25, Mar. 25

*  Monthly service projects (book drive for Innovis children's hospital, family fun night, fundraising for Make-a-Wish)

*  Attend the Minnesota CEC conference.  Students have been able to attend the conference FREE of charge by volunteering at the conference.  Our local chapter has supported students by providing them with FREE travel to and from the conference as well.  Students who attend the state conference can apply for funds to attend the national conference at a very reasonable rate also!

When and where do you meet?

*  We meet monthly on Mondays at 4:15 in Lommen 208- see the board outside Lommen 206 for dates and meeting topics

*  Service project times and dates vary- see the board outside Lommen 206 for dates/times/locations

I'm not available Wednesdays at 4:15, can I still be involved in the group?

OF COURSE!! We have a listserv to keep busy members involved in what we are doing.

How do I join the listserv?

Send an email to Amy W, SCEC's President, at wietgram@mnstate.edu or our chapter advisor, Ann Goldade, @ goldade@mnstate.edu or fill out the sign-up sheet from your professor today.

EMSP and SCEC unite!

By going to EMSP meetings you will find out about what SCEC is up to and vice versa.

Any member of SCEC is invited to go to EMSP events and any EMSP members are invited to SCEC events. (EMSP meets Mondays at 7:30- look for signs)

Can I join SCEC without joining the national CEC?

You do NOT need to be a member of the national CEC in order to be a member of SCEC. It is just an added bonus to be able to join the national group at a discounted student rate ($60/year now through your first year as a teacher compared to joining later at $120/year). **You do need to be a member of the national organization to receive the professional journals and attend the conferences.
