GPS Tracking
Some collars are outfitted with GPS (Global Positioning System) technology. The animal carries the GPS receiver within the collar which receives data from satellites. There are 24 satellites circling the earth, which transmit signals picked up by the collar. The GPS receiver literally pinpoints itself, and because it is attached to the animal, gives the animal's location. The data is stored in the collar and is not retrieved by the biologist until the collar drops off the animal and is recovered.
