Eyes on Wildlife-GIS

GIS (Geographic Information Systems) is a computer software program which is used to create a visual representation of numbers and data. Maps, queries, sorting, layering of data sets, color coding, etc. are some of the basic features of the software. Students from grades 7-12 have been able to design and build GIS maps of the collared animal data. Visit the various research projects to see some of their maps. GIS brings to students a color picture of all those numbers, and allows them to visually observe patterns and observations in the animals they are tracking.

Students use a combination of software programs provided by ESRI and EPPL7. We are very grateful to Charlie Fitzpatrick of ESRI and Ken Pekarek of EPPL7 for their support of this project.

Many thanks go out to Michelle Lee Buitenwerf for all of her help in making GIS possible for students and teachers. Shelly has given us support and training to make this all possible, and continues to work with Eyes on Wildlife.

Licenses for EPPL7 and EPIC for Windows GIS software have been provided to Prairie Wind School in Perham, MN as part of a new MN Land Management Information pilot program to encourage the use of GIS technology in elementary and secondary schools.
