How to get an A
Most college classes are difficult. Expect more reading assignments, more work done outside of the classroom, and exams and papers that cover a greater amount of material. The days of easy-A’s and one hour of studying at night are over.

Start at the beginning
Introduce yourself to your professor, but don’t stop there. If you need help or have questions, visit with him or her after class or during office hours. If it’s a professor from your department, ask him or her for guidance concerning your major.

Good work = good grades
Make sure the instructor knows you are interested in doing good work, not just getting good grades. Learning to please your instructor is part of your education and will be useful in learning to please your future boss.

Go to class
Sitting in a classroom is the easiest part of college and it cuts the study time in half. Why make it hard on yourself? Go!

Pay attention
Sit in the front row, in the middle. This has several benefits, including fewer distractions. You’ll have to get there early the first week or two, but then the seat is yours.

Ask questions
Rewrite your notes and identify things that are unclear. Make a list of questions and ask the professor to explain them to you. It helps to know what the professor wants you to focus on and gives you a better idea of what you need to study.

Study consistently
Follow the course outlines and keep up with the reading. Don’t get behind because you’ll never catch up. For generations college students have tried to find an easier way. There isn’t one. Study a little every night before a big test. It’s better than cramming and you retain more.

Be well rested and well nourished
Mind and body go hand in hand. If you’re wiped out physically you won’t have much to give mentally. Study really hard for the first test so you’re not unprepared and then adjust your study habits after that.
