Celebrate the 2008 winter solstice with Alan and Sandy Rawson at their Chimacum home in the second of their Nordlys (Northern Lights) afternoon concerts showcasing the greats of Nordic classical violin and piano duo music. This year’s Nordlys highlights the brilliant Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius.

The program opens with two early works, beginning with the energetic and infectious Perpetuum mobile in its original form, obtained from the Sibelius Institute archive reproduced from its one and only publication in an 1891 Finnish journal, followed by the second movement of his unpublished violin sonata in F major composed in 1889. Other works include 2 sets of short character studies, Six pieces Op. 79 and Four Pieces Op. 115, both revealing of the composer’s fascinating, creative and inventive mind through his favorite chamber medium, the violin and piano duo. The program will conclude with two of Sibelius’ best known works, an arrangement of his beloved Valse Triste along with the middle and finale movements of his violin virtuoso masterpiece, the Concerto in D minor, Op. 47.

Complimentary to the wonderful music, Sandy will again apply her love of gourmet preparations for a splendid reception to follow, including Finnish favorites such as Karjalanpiirakat, Graavilohi and others.
