Roland E. Barden, Ph.D. Biographical Statement Roland E. Barden, Ph.D.
was appointed the ninth President of Minnesota State University
Moorhead in Moorhead, Minn. on July 1, 1994. Prior to that, he had
served as the university’s Vice-President for Academic Affairs for
five years. Dr. Barden came to
Minnesota State University Moorhead from the University of Wyoming
where he began in 1971 as a faculty member in the Departments of
Chemistry and Biochemistry. His administrative career commenced when
he served as Head of the Department of Chemistry, then Associate Dean
of the College of Arts and Sciences, and finally Associate Provost for
Academic Affairs at the University of Wyoming. He received his BS
degree in Chemistry from the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks.
He earned his masters and doctoral degrees in Biochemistry from the
University of Wisconsin-Madison. He completed a postdoctoral
fellowship at Case Western Reserve University. As a scholar of enzyme
chemistry and surfactant solutions, Dr. Barden received over
$750,000 in research grants from funding agencies including the
National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Marathon
Oil Company, and Department of Energy/Laramie Energy Technology
Center. He is the author or co-author of over 40 research articles and
has presented over 30 research papers at national and regional science
conferences. In addition, Dr. Barden has been reviewer of biomedical
fellowship grant applications for the National Institutes of Health
and received a Research Career Development Award from NIH. Dr. Barden is an active contributor and leader in professional organizations in higher education. Currently, he is a consultant and evaluator for the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association and has also served on that organization’s Accreditation Review Council. In the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, he is a member of the Human Resources Committee of the Presidents' Leadership Council. For FY2006, Dr. Barden is Co-Chair of the Leadership Council with Chancellor McCormick and a member of the Board of Directors for the Greater Fargo-Moorhead Economic Development Corporation. He is a member of the Board of Directors for the Tri-College University. He is a member of
Rotary International, the Lutheran Church (ELCA), American Chemical Society,
and American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Dr. Barden is a native of McGregor, N.D. He is married to Carolyn J. Eliason. They have three grown children (a son and two daughters) and three grandchildren. His hobbies and interests include reading, hiking, community building, and attending performances of MSUM's talented students.. |
