RE: News and Issues

NCA Visit Results- A Glowing Report: I am delighted to tell you that Moorhead State University received an exceptionally positive exit interview from the NCA team visit. A three member team of consultant-evaluators from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools was on our campus March 20-21, 2000 for a focused visit. While the written report will be forwarded at a later date, the exit interview strongly affirmed that MSU has made very significant progress as an institution since the last comprehensive review visit. Specifically, this NCA team indicated that the institution has made remarkable progress with addressing deferred maintenance, student assessment and institutional effectiveness, enrollment and retention, and strategic planning.

This positive report comes out of the hard work of many faculty, staff, and administrators on campus. I would particularly like to thank the Strategic Planning Committee, Strategic Budget Committee, Liberal Studies Assessment Committee, the Institutional Assessment Committee, and the NCA Task Force chaired by Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs Judy Strong and co-chaired by Dr. Ted Gracyk. The outcomes affirmed the hard work of Admissions, Financial Aid, Records, the Enrollment Management Committee, and many others to make MSU a student-friendly place. Your efforts truly made the difference in the outcomes of the focused visit. I also appreciate the participation of a good number of faculty during the open session; the visiting NCA team stated that they were impressed with your participation.

Thank you!

Legislative Update: Your lobbying efforts are making a difference in the ongoing legislative session. At this point, we are optimistic that funding for the 5-block expansion effort and for asset preservation will be included in the House's final bonding bill. We are also confident that funding for the 5-block expansion project and for planning and design of the science teaching lab annex to Hagen Hall will be included in the Senate's final bonding bill. In addition, the MnSCU case for supplemental funding to our base budget for increased enrollment is supported by the legislature.

As you know, Governor Ventura has the power to support or veto our funding requests. No one seems to have inside information regarding the Governor's intentions.

The bonding bill should be through the conference committee and forwarded to Governor Ventura in a couple of weeks. This is a good time to send a letter or an email to Senator Keith Langseth and Representative Kevin Goodno to thank them for their support. Now that the bills are at the "floor vote" stage, the support of every legislator counts. If you know other legislators, please encourage them to support our bills, too.

This is also a good time to send a letter or an email to the Governor to ask for his support for the 5-block expansion project, science building annex, and for the enrollment increase funding. A list of suggested discussion points and the mailing addresses are available on the Office of the President web site at http://www.moorhead.msus.edu/president/lobby.htm Thank you for joining the university community in communicating our needs to the legislature. Every voice makes a difference!

Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecture: I am pleased to announce that the 1999-2000 Dille Distinguished Faculty Lecture will be presented by Dr. Shawn Dunkirk, Associate Professor of Chemistry. The event will be held at 7 p.m. Monday, April 24 in the Thrust Theatre. We look forward to Dr. Dunkirk's address following by an insightful panel discussion. Watch your mail for additional publicity.

Save the Dates - President's Retreat: Save the dates of June 22-23, 2000 for the annual President's Retreat. All members of the university community are invited to participate. This year, the focus will be university communication. An important goal of the retreat is to develop specific proposals for improving communications. I look forward to exploring this topic in-depth during the retreat. Complete details will be coming your way soon.
