January 2000 Campus Update January 13, 2000 TO: Campus Community FROM: President Barden RE: News and Issues Welcome to the year 2000 and another successful semester! I hope that you had an enjoyable and relaxing break. As we begin the new semester, I would like to update you on several issues. Assistant to the President: I am pleased to announce that Dr. Susanne L. Williams has been named to the position of Assistant to the President. Dr. Williams is an assistant professor in the Mass Communications Department. She will teach two courses during the spring 2000 semester and then one course a semester beginning in August. Dr. Williams brings media writing, public relations, and speech writing experience to the position. She earned a doctorate in communication at Wayne State University in Detroit where she was the communications officer for the WSU College of Nursing. Y2K: Thanks to the tireless efforts of many individuals, our campus fared very well when it comes to Y2K. I would particularly like to thank our Y2K steering committee: Les Bakke, Jeanne Alm, Todd Stugelmayer, Brian Oxton, Kirsti Johnson, Duane Money, Gordy Bergman, David Holsen, Dr. Judy Strong, Mark Rice and Dr. David Crockett. Because of your foresight and planning, MSU did not experience any significant glitches as a result of turning the calendar to the year 2000. Further, several of those listed above, plus Mike Pehler, Ryan Kapperud, and student security workers, were asked to spend their New Year's Eve working on campus due to our needs and the City of Moorhead's Y2K plan. Your time and efforts are greatly appreciated. Scholarship Partnership: A new scholarship opportunity is available to Hispanic/Latino high school seniors who enroll at MSU. A $30,000 initial gift was made by the Ronald McDonald House Charities and Hispanic American Commitment to Educational Resources Scholarship Program (RMHR/HACER). This new partnership is a remarkable example of philanthropy involving businesses that give back to the community. The MSU Alumni Foundation must raise scholarship funds to match the gift which provides all of us an excellent opportunity to contribute to a very worthy cause. Dille Fund for Excellence Awards: Watch your mail and Continews for the official call for applications for the Dille Fund for Excellence Awards. The application deadline is Feb. 18, 2000. If you haven't done so already, be thinking of projects that would improve the educational experiences of our students. All members of the campus community may apply for awards. I hope that you are able to submit an application. Enrollment Update: Preliminary numbers suggest good news for our student enrollment. Spring 2000 semester enrollment appears to have increased. Fall 2000 semester applications from freshman and transfer students are up over where we were at the same point last year. Of course, all of us make a difference when it comes to enrollment. Your efforts to welcome and assist students helps ensure that they show up in class! Experts in the News: We're seeing more regional media attention of our faculty experts. Our own Drs. Richard Pemble, biology, and Michael Michlovic, anthropology, were the featured authorities in a Dec. 30, 1999 Saint Paul Pioneer Press article. The two were extensively interviewed and pictured in "A Prairie Fragment," a page-long feature story exploring life in Minnesota in 1000 A.D. beginning on page 1A. Go to the February 2000 Update |
