2001 Campus Update September 10, 2001 To: The campus community From: President Barden Re: Campus update Open Forum:
Please join me for an open-university forum at 3:30-4:30 p.m.
Thursday, September 13 in CB 111. David Crockett, Vice President for
Administrative Affairs and I will present “MSUM Fiscal Plan for FY
2002.” Refreshments will be served. Enrollment:
Thanks to the good work of everyone on campus, we project an
enrollment of 7,550, up 3% from last year. At this point, our new
entering freshman enrollment has increased by 4% and our new entering
transfer admissions by 1.6% over last year. While the numbers may
fluctuate a bit over the next few days, we are confident that we will
meet our target enrollment. I appreciate the hard work of our
admissions office staff and the commitment all faculty and staff have
made to ensuring that our students have an excellent experience when
they visit our campus and ultimately engage in learning here at MSUM. Web Redesign:
Thanks to the web development team of JoDee Haugrud, Amanda Stegmaier,
Les Bakke, and their student assistants for their work in redesigning
the university’s home page at www.mnstate.edu. I appreciate their efforts to incorporate the
suggestions made by the university web advisory group. The web
advisory group was created as a result of the 2000 President’s
Retreat on the topic of communication and met several times during the
spring semester to explore ways to improve our campus web presence. I
invite you to share your feedback regarding the new design by clicking
on “About This Site” on www.mnstate.edu. Dille Fund for Excellence Call for Proposals: I invite you to submit your proposals for student-centered projects to the Dille Fund for Excellence Awards. The call for applications and the grant application form is now online at www.mnstate.edu/president. The deadline for applications is 12 noon Friday, Nov. 16. Recent Grant-Writing Success: Congratulations to Matthew Craig (PI) and George Davis (co-PI), and senior grant personnel Tim Peil, Tim Harms, Jerry Stockrahm, Don Krogstad, and Steve Lindaas. The National Science Foundation awarded $209,000 over three years to develop four new traveling exhibits for the Regional Science Center. The exhibits will showcase the physical sciences and will be designed in a summer internship program involving several of our students and faculty, local teachers, as well as White Earth Tribal and Community College. Congratulations also to
Rhonda Ficek for her recent grant success. MnSCU awarded an E-Learning
Initiative grant to develop with Bemidji State University an online
master's program in Educational Technology. The program builds on our
“Teaching and Learning with Technology” certificate program. The
total MnSCU award was $110,000 to MSUM, $109,000 to BSU, and $17,500
to a university in Iceland. Grounds and Facilities Progress: Work to complete the five-block area continues. Landscaping the areas around the new parking lots is nearly finished and security phones will be installed in the lots this semester. You will also see new campus signs replace the old Moorhead State University signs on 11th Street. By now, you have probably found your way to the newly opened Café Connection in the link between Flora Frick Hall and the Bookstore area of MacLean Hall. Café Connection is operated by Sodexho and the Union. Other construction work in Flora Frick has taken a bit longer than originally projected. We plan for the new home for the post office, printing services area, and academic advising center to be completed this month. The design for the new Hagen science laboratory addition and Hagen renovation is nearly finished. As you know, the addition will go into the space between Hagen and Weld Hall. During the 2002 legislative session, we will pursue funding so that we may begin construction next August. Building plans continue for Neumaier II, our new student apartment residence building. Provided the Board of Trustees approves the building plans, third-party funding enables us to begin construction in November. We plan the 36-unit facility to be ready for students in August 2002. The furnished apartments will house four students per unit. |
