2001 Campus Update
July 11, 2001 To: The Campus Community From: President Barden Re: Campus Update 4th of
July: THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the
planning and launching of our 29th annual 4th of
July festivities. The celebration was as close to perfect as we can
get! The attendance was excellent, the logistics were superbly carried
out, there were no medical or safety emergencies, and the weather was
made-to-order. Our campus security officers did, however, need to
locate three lost Norwegian visitors (who were safely returned to
their tour bus). Many families and individuals told “Uncle Sam”
that they very much appreciated the MSUM people for their wonderful
community service on the 4th of July. Roland Dille says it
was the biggest celebration event ever – and he’s seen them all,
of course. Campus Construction Update: Several campus construction projects are nearing completion. Perhaps the most visible project is the recent beautification of the five-block area. I’m sure that you have noticed the new landscaping and lighting around the western edge of campus. Because of the recent dry weather conditions, the project is moving along quickly. Construction of the new home for the campus post office, printing services, and the advising center in Flora Frick’s old swimming pool and publications space is progressing. The area will be completed in time for fall semester. The new security building for MSUM campus security and Moorhead community policing will resume construction now that the legislative session is completed. At the corner of 9th Avenue and 17th Street, you’ll see framing move quickly and the building should be completed in September. I encourage you to take in a fall Dragon athletic event at the stadium. You will notice the newly completed stadium railings and steps, which meet new State of Minnesota safety standards.
Details are quickly falling into place as we move closer to
constructing “Neumaier II,” our new residence apartment building.
As you may know, the apartment building will be built south of Murray
Hall where the driveway comes from 9th Avenue. We plan to
break ground in November. The university is working with the Alumni
Foundation on the project, and it appears that the Foundation will
assume a major role in the financial arrangements. Because we are
authorized by the State Legislature to privately fund the structure,
it was desirable to seek assistance from the county or city to gain
tax-exempt status for up to $2.5 million in debt service. Fortunately,
the Clay County Board of Commissioners approved our request on July
10. This is an important step in the planning process.
City of Moorhead Construction: Three local construction
projects will make a difference to our university community. The
improved railroad crossing at 12th Avenue South and the new
surface on 4th Avenue South between 8th and 14th
Streets will undoubtedly enhance the commuter traffic routes to
campus. The bridge construction at I-94 and U.S. 75 is moving along on
schedule and has not been a serious traffic disruption. These
improvements make it easier for all of us to make our way to campus. Wireless Communication Coming to MSU Moorhead: Infranet Wireless will be constructing eight wireless communication towers in the F-M area. Negotiations are being finalized for the company to build one wireless tower on the MSU Moorhead campus, next to Nemzek. This means that by next year, we will have access by subscription to wireless data transmission on our campus. Students living in our dorms or the surrounding area will continue to be able to purchase cable internet access as has been the current practice. But because of the new wireless tower that will be constructed here in the future, students may choose instead to purchase wireless internet access.
