July 2004 Campus Update

July 19, 2004

To:       The Campus Community

From:    President Barden

Re:       Campus Update

President’s Summer Retreat—What’s Next: To continue our focus following the June 28 President’s Summer Retreat, I’ve appointed a President’s Task Force on Student Alcohol Misuse and charged the group with developing a strategic plan to guide MSUM as we address student misuse of alcohol. On June 29, the task force began its work by engaging in a day-long strategic planning session led by Dr. Beth DeRicco, associate director of the Center for College Health and Safety. Dr. DeRicco was the keynote speaker and discussant at the retreat. I look forward to reviewing the task force’s recommendations for coordinating our campus efforts on this important issue, as we seek ways to improve the success of our students. The task force members include:

·         Norma Anderson, Associate Professor of Technology
·         Beth Conner, Director of Housing
·         Jarilyn Gess, Associate Professor, New Center, and Associate Dean of Education
·         Penny Klein, Director of Hendrix Health Center
·         Thomas Lane, Associate Director of Student Union and Activities
·         Travis Maier, Student Representative, Student Senate President
·         Lynn Peterson, Director of Sexual Assault Services at Hendrix Health Center
·         Alfonso Scandrett, Director of Athletics
·         Cliff Schuette, Director of Counseling Services
·         Kathy Scott, Campus Judicial Officer
·         Marisa Sheeran, Student Representative
·         Jamie Tate, Student Representative, Peer Health Educator
·         Jim Weckler, Associate Professor and Chair, Languages
·         Deb White, Associate Professor, Sociology and Criminal Justice
·         Warren Wiese, Vice President for Student Affairs
·         Susanne Williams, Task Force Chair and Assistant to the President
·         Ferman Woodberry, Director of Security

Fourth of July—Thank You: Thanks to everyone who made our annual Fourth of July event a great success! Despite the unseasonably cool weather and a Sunday-holiday, our ticket sales and number of guests were just as robust as in previous years. I believe this speaks highly of the support we enjoy with our hometown community. I appreciate all of the hard work done by our volunteers, building and grounds crews, and the Office of Administrative Affairs. This event is, emphatically, our most successful public service effort, year after year.

Fall 2004 Enrollment: To date, we are seeing virtually the same number of new entering freshmen and new transfer students enrolled in fall 2004 classes as we did one year ago. We expect fall enrollment to be essentially the same as last year.

Science Laboratory Building: Our newest academic building will be open for classes this fall. Science faculties have begun to move into their new labs. We will officially dedicate the Science Laboratory Building with a ceremony to be scheduled during Homecoming week. The final date/time will be announced when the details are finalized.

No Bonding Bill=Stalled Projects: As you are aware, the lack of a bonding bill this legislative session places an indefinite hold on Hagen Hall’s scheduled renovation. While this undertaking is the more visible project on our list of funding requests, you may not have realized that the lack of a bonding bill also translates into zero funding for asset renewal (HEAPR), which is the funding used specifically for roof repairs, building renovations, and the like. There is no “magical” date that signals a closed window beyond which the governor can not schedule a special session. All of us, including the supporters of the rest of the state-funded projects and entities across in Minnesota, wait to see what will unfold.

NEW Leadership Development Institute at MSUM: Congratulations to Deborah White, Associate Professor of Sociology and Criminal Justice, for coordinating the first Tri-College National Education for Women Leadership (NEW Leadership) Development Institute, hosted at MSUM May 23-27. For two years leading up to the event, Dr. White led a planning committee comprised of community representatives and faculty, staff, and students from MSUM, North Dakota State University, White Earth Tribal and Community College, and Concordia College. About 40 women participated in the week-long residential program, which aims to develop local-level public and community leadership among women of diverse backgrounds from Cass and Clay counties and the surrounding region. Dr. White and her planning committee hope the NEW Leadership Institute will become an annual event.

New Grant Funding in the Sciences: I’d like to note the following recent accomplishments in the area of grant awards. Congratulations!

·         The Dakota Medical Foundation awarded $390,000 to the Tri-College University Nursing Collaboration. It is the largest award ever made by the Foundation.  MSUM will use its funds to complete the development of a generic nursing program, as well as a transfer track for a generic ADRN.

·         Joseph Provost and Mark Wallert, biotechnology and biochemistry professors, received $197,023 from the National Institute of Health to continue research in recombinant DNA. Dr. Wallert was also notified that his $95,469 grant proposal to incorporate research-based investigative experiences into freshman level cell biology will be fully funded by the National Science Foundation through the Course, Curriculum, and Laboratory Improvement (CCLI) Program.
