The Public Affairs Institute is a function within the Political Science Department that offers research and consulting expertise to regional governments and non-profit organizations. Services include policy analyses, feasibility studies, survey research and consulting on strategic planning. Recent clients include the Fargo-Moorhead Metropolitan Council of Governments, the Moorhead Public Housing Agency, the Clay County Sheriff's Department, the Fargo Forum, the Moorhead Police Department and Becker County. The institute is perhaps best known for its pre-election voter surveys and election day exit polls conducted for WDAY-TV in Fargo. The Public Affairs Institute hires student employees to work on its research projects, giving them an opportunity to participate in a real-world research project from inception through completion. This experience advances students’ skills in research, gathering and processing information and the political process.
