Political Science Major Spends Semester In South Africa
Jennifer Linstad, Political Science senior, traveled to South Africa to spend Spring semester 2008 studying at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth & George. She joined a group of 17 other students from St. Cloud University to study World History and South African Politics. The group lived in an international student housing complex and had time to travel to Lasotho and Swaziland during their stay. Jennifer states, " It was an eye-opening experience. I learned first hand about racism, racial conflicts, social conflicts and post apartheid social situations in South Africa. It is a beatiful county! The beauty of the mountains, oceans coastlines and inland areas are beyond description. It was an awakening to see the world through such a different perspective." In addition to classes and travel, Jennifer also volunteered as a tutor in one of the impoverished neighborhoods outside Port Elizabeth where she helped elementary school children with their English skills.
