The Philosophy Department Student Fund was started by Rick Ehlers with a generous pledge to the MSUM Foundation earmarked for the Philosophy Department. Mr. Ehlers is a 1994 graduate of the MSUM Philosophy Department, where he also worked as a teaching assistant through the Honors Apprenticeship program. He now resides in Los Angeles and works in the film industry.
The intended purpose of the fund is to facilitate the acquisition of skills that will prove useful to those majors interested in pursuing philosophy as a professional career. A top priority is to encourage research and the preparation of papers for presentation at conferences or for publication. The fund is managed by the Philosophy Department, and interested students may submit proposals/applications to the Department. Projects and activities that are suitable for proposals include: costs related to research and the preparation of papers (e.g., obtaining materials and copies); travel to present papers at conferences or meetings; organizing a lecture or conference for philosophy students (e.g., paying the costs related to bringing a speaker to campus); purchase of materials or equipment for the Department Conference Room library.
Proposals may be submitted by any philosophy major or group of majors. Proposals should be submitted by written application to the Department chair. If the proposal involves a project for which there may be alternative funding at the University (e.g., the President has some funding available for student participation at conferences), the Department will recommend that such funding be sought first. It is ultimately at the Department's discretion whether or not a proposal is funded.
Regular reports, at least annually, will be provided to Mr.
Ehlers.
