I wish to welcome you all to the chemistry
department. Chemistry is the basis for life. Everything we see depends on chemistry.
Chemistry is part of science. Chemistry is closely related to the other branches of
science. Biology, for example, is based on principles of chemistry. We are made of
chemical substances. Chemical changes are happening in our eyes, lungs, and blood. Your
skin, bones, hair, and everything else that is part of your body consist of combinations
of chemical substances. Some students may be afraid to study chemistry because of bad
experiences with previous courses in math or science. Some believe mistakenly that since
they did not do so well in science and math earlier, they cannot learn these subjects now.
Perhaps you may feel that you may not be ready for this course! In order to succeed in
your study of chemistry, you need only the desire to learn and the willingness to work
hard. In many ways learning a new subject is like learning to engage in a new sport or
play a musical instrument. You will be tense at first, you will make mistakes, but by
constant practice, you will develop new skills and self-confidence. While you are
learning, do not be afraid of asking questions that may seem elementary or to say that you
don't understand something. Don't hesitate to get help from your professor, your
classmates, and your friends. It is always helpful to work in a small group with others
who have similar problems. I hope you enjoy your chemistry courses and wish you the best.
