The Parent-Child Communication Program (PCCP) was developed by Dr. Louis J. De Maio in 1998.  Field studies have shown PCCP to be an effective method for enhancing parental-child interaction patterns and fostering children's language development.

PCCP was funded, in part, by a grant from the Dakota Medical Foundation.

What is PCCP?

The Parent-Child Communication Program (PCCP) is a special training model for teaching parents (caregivers) how to:
-- Establish and enhance an effective communication network with their child.
-- Facilitate their child's language development

Who is PCCP for?

The program is designed for parents (caregivers) with children between one  and five years of age. It is also available for child daycare providers, preschool teachers, speech-language pathologists and other professionals working with young children.

What does PCCP do?

It teaches parents how to use the five essential components of the program.

    1. Seven Facilitating Techniques for promoting communication and language
        development.

    2. Turn-Taking as a means of organizing social interaction.

    3. Play and Daily Activities as the environment for learning to communicate.

    4. Vocal Accenting as a method for highlighting and reinforcing what their child
        is learning.

    5. Physical Positioning to promote joint attention and joint action.

    How is this done?

There are three elements contained in the training sessions.

1. Information: The program includes formal instruction following a manual written in "easy to understand" terms. Parents will learn fundamental facts about the nature of communication, how to
promote successful communication with their child and how to facilitate language development.

2. Demonstration: A PCCP instructor will demonstrate the essential components of the program with particular emphasis on using the seven facilitating techniques. Demonstrations are given through
videotapes and actual "hands-on" applications with parents and their child. Demonstration sessions are videotaped and are available for parents to review at home.

3. Practice: Parents are given time to use what they are learning. Practice sessions will take place on site and at home after parents are given information and demonstration.

    How long does it take?

Two instructional sessions with a minimum of four one-hour demonstration and practice sessions.

Where does PCCP take place?

Formal classes and individual training sessions are available each semester at the Moorhead State University Speech-Language-Hearing Clinic located in Grier Hall.

The program is also available to parents and professionals in the surrounding service region communities of Moorhead, MN and Fargo, ND.
