Paralegal Department

Student Club

The Minnesota State Paralegal Association Moorhead (MSPAM) is a student organization whose membership is open to all declared majors in MSUM's Paralegal Department. The purposes of the association are to provide a focal meeting point for the common objectives of paralegal students, to enhance interest and enthusiasm for the career, to provide a forum for speakers and programs, to begin networking with the legal profession outside the university, to increase leadership skills, to become involved in university and community service projects, and to provide a social setting for the enhancement of friendships and respect among students and faculty.

MSPAM engages in fundraising projects throughout the school year, with the funds being used mainly for the award of one or more scholarships to members. Fundraising projects have included sweatshirt and t-shirt sales, car washes, raffles, concession stands, and others.

MSPAM has an excellent record of community service, including clothing, toy, and food drives for local needy persons; transporting groceries for the food bank; collection and donation of toys and clothing for the domestic violence shelter; sponsoring an immigrant family at Christmas time; and visitation and recreation with nursing home residents.

MSPAM elects one member to be a liaison with the Red River Valley Paralegal Association, and one to be a liaison with the Minnesota Paralegal Association.

MSPAM meets each month. The association divides itself into several committees, which are active in carrying out the various projects. Some meetings include speakers from the legal community who share information and ideas on job searches and other matters. Other speakers have included campus staff who provide guidance on the development of resumes and job interviewing skills.

MSPAM plans social events for its members, including pizza parties, rock-and-bowl, and an annual holiday party. The year culminates with the spring banquet.

All of the activities of MSPAM lead to immediate beneficial results, and to long-range development of friendships, professional relationships, and positive maturing leadership potential.
